Do you think it's possible to have a rear side mount similar to this for the JK? I realize the G Wagon has upper and lower rail mounts and the JK doesn't, but you seem to be able to come up with a solution to everything:sombrero:

I did a quick sketch showing how this idea might work with no drilling on the Jeep or hardtop...

A bracket of 16-gauge steel (1/16" thick) would go on top of the tub/under the hardtop and be secured in place with the hardtop bolts, and a top mounting arrangement that uses the hatch hinge bolts in the back and clamps on the the drip rail in the front would enable a rack like the one you're asking about to be mounted without drilling.

I've drawn it with a Molle grid, but any kind of arrangement for mounting things could be done. Wouldn't be hard to make, just requires a little detailed design and some accurate bending. No drilling, easy to install/remove.

Anybody want one? Might be a fun project to do :).

You nailed it! You could easily access tow straps, molle bags, shovel, rotopax, etc.

Yesterday I was reading a recent issue of Land Rover Monthly and I came across this jerry can mount:

Seemed like it could be a useful place to mount a jerry can on a JKU, so I did a quick sketch:

I like your first draft better than that of Land Rover. It provides more room to to mount things and has an Armor Type look.

The way I've done the design, it's composed of three parts - the top bracket that's secured by the hatch hinge bolts/clamps to the drip rail, the bottom bracket that goes between the hardtop flange and the tub, and the gear panel. This is for a number of reasons:

- Makes all the parts smaller instead of one very large part (cheaper to manufacture/ship)
- Allows different gear panel options with the same brackets (re-use of parts for multiple gear panel options makes multiple options cheaper/possible)
- The tub brackets can be used on both sides, so reduces the number of different parts to manufacture (again reduces cost)

Anyway, because of those design choices, the Molle panel could be one option, a jerry can mount could be another. And there could be other gear panel options that haven't been thought of yet... anyone got any other ideas for things to mount there? :).

I realize we all like "stuff' hanging off all parts and areas of our expo vehicles.. but I've always thought with all this stuff on the sides top etc.. some if not most of it would become mere obstructions and get int he way of limbs or be knocked off by driving too close trees or cliffs.. The jeep/vehicle can't get any bigger, so we need to manage the space inside the vehicle better to create sweet spots for all those things we need to carry.

Also, I'm wondering with the jerry can on the side by the window, if hit hard enough could it smash into or break the glass.. this would tell me, to remove the glass all together and create a pocket there for the can or other tools.. which would actually fit more snug and closer to the center of the jeep instead of hanging off the side.

I was thinking that it might be nice to mount things there after travel, like say the on demand hot water unit, water bag for gravity filter, small flat screen TV for movie night under the stars while enjoying a nice IPA:lurk:

Well our idea of get away is leaving everything behind. So dragging a flat screen along for the ride then setting it up after your arrive to your destination isn't my idea of enjoyment.. We're simple folk who just want to sit and watch nature go by and not have to watch it on a television/monitor unless I'm editing a video. So in this respect, I guys a side mount system like Jeff posted would be useful when nothing's mounted on that would end up getting in the way. Save this space for later I suppose.
