Are we any closer to losing that 50 pound lump of lead hanging off the front of our trucks?

Unfortunately, not yet. At $999, is that the battery you wanna have under the hood when you want to start up your car in the middle of nowhere in sub-freezing temperatures? Yikes!

Price aside, I still would not think this battery suitable for trail use. In a limited event, circle track, Baja race, or other one-day situation where a chase car or pit team is around, maybe. For independent travel beyond cell phone range, no.

I have used A123 cells in other applications through my business, and these guys have definitely got the attention of a lot of huge manufacturers. The cell technology is improving daily, and this is something that could easily be done in the not so distant future, and at a reasonable cost.

At the rate battery technology has improved in the past few years, its complelety doable soon.
