I believe one of the reasons for limited U.S. availability is the Horst link patent issues. KTM bikes have used 4-bar linkages which means they either pay Specialized a tribute or they do not distribute in the U.S. For 2013 they have gone to a single pivot and so maybe expanding the line to roadies is part of the introduction here.
Kermit, they are made in Taiwan AFAIK, likely Giant. There are some unique things, KTM head tubes have some special thing that is supposed to distribute forces better. But Giant makes 3/4 of all carbon frame out there, maybe more.
