Beating a Dead Horse...what tire should I choose?

ran 2 sets of BFG A/T's on my DC Tundra, with good wear and life. This year I switched to the Falken Wildpeaks and have had great success on and off road with them. I'm running 285/75/16.

Man, I do like the Falken after reading about it. Solid tire, and priced a bit lower too. Not sure if the D rated tire would work for me with the FWC on the Tundra. I plan to leave the camper on most of the time.

A D rated tire will easily hold that setup and more and as far a bulging the side wall not going to happen.

Thanks, the ST looks interesting, but 285/75 gets a D rating. The STT is an E, but looks like it may be more of an MT?

Having had both the ST (255/85/16) and the ST MAXX (285/75/16) I can tell you that personally I prefer the MAXX. It's smoother and quieter on the road, and still just as good in the snow and mud, and it's got a better more puncture resistant sidewall.

I also run the Falken W/P. I like them! When they done,I will buy them again.

Any concerns about the siping only going 20-30% into the tread? Discount tire mentioned that too me since they have had a few returns due to the shallow siping.

. Thanks Jim. I've read through your thread on them, and it's what has me leaning towards this tire. Wish I could find them in a local shop so I can take a look at them. Any problems with the added weight?

I haven't had the problem. They've been good for me and two of my sons. We've been all over the southern Sierras in the rain and snow. I have an f150 and both my sons have Toyotas.

Not on the truck. The added weight is really not noticeable driving the truck. I've got upgraded brakes (slotted rotors and EBC pads), so the truck stops great and still accelerates great. The only issue with tire weight is doing rotations every 5000 miles, at 61 lbs for the tire and 35 lbs for the rim, hefting that 96 lbs 4 times wears an old man out. Glad I exercise and try to stay in some kind of shape.....

Glad to hear it's not noticeable while driving, thanks! Oh, and who knows....you might be onto a new workout craze! Move over Zumba, lets rotate these tires!

I've got a little over 50k miles on my Duratracs now (C-rated, 265/75 R16, 1st Gen Tacoma). Mostly road and light trail duty.
I still have about 10k miles left on them if I decide to run them to the very end, but they're getting slick on wet roads and they have gotten very loud. Still balance and ride great, and the noise doesn't really bother me if I'm alone with the stereo on, but on the interstate with passengers they're "bad mud terrain loud". They got really loud at about 30k miles and have stayed pretty consistent since. You could probably hear me coming down the road from about a mile out......

I really, really want to try the Cooper S/T Maxx's next time around, just worried a little about weight. Although I won't go with another C-rated tire on this truck, so there's going to be more tire weight in my future regardless. My truck weighs too much for C-rated tires.

I would love to hear from somebody with some miles on the S/T Maxx's to see if they got loud or really slick.

Looks like the 255/85 might be available too. Wonder if it will fit well?

I think I'm at 45000 miles now on the Maxx's. Maybe 50, 000. (Nope, I checked, actual mileage is 43,000) I'll have to look back. Regardless I'll get another 10-20, 000 our of them so next fall I'll be buying them again.
No they are not loud. Louder than new, yes, but no where near mud tire loud. Windows up and radio on its just a background hum.
Slick? A little. But manageable. I only notice it pulling away from stoplights in a hurry. You can tell they are not new for sure but I would certainly consider them safe enough for anyone in the family to drive the truck. They're not sliding you off the road going around corners of that's what you need to know. ..
