Benny's Gen 3 Montero

Personally I think you'll see a noticeable improvement when you do switch to full synthetic fluids all around like you want to. I'm a fan of Royal Purple myself. My Monty is still a work in progress, but on my Suburban I changed the oil and rear diff and saw my mileage improve from 14-15 on average, to an observed 17.5 mpg average. Factory highway rating is 18 so I was impressed.

That's great. Do you know if you just drain an refill? Or do you have to replace gaskets and filters? If any?

After a trans flush and lift I saw 18mpg for an all uphill trip into the mountains with 4 people, 2 dogs, and enough gear for a small village. Drove from 5k ft to 11k ft. and did ~1.5 hrs of offroading. On the way back (downhill) doing ~80mph, I saw 21mpg!

I'm attributing this mostly to the amazing Michelin tires I have. New Coopers in 235/85 are on the way though. They are taller and heavier, and I imagine have a lot more grip/drag, so I'm interested to see the outcome.

Wow 21mpg sure is great. Yes, full synthetic fluid would make a difference since if is thinner than conventional oil yet can take more abuse

Awesome. That's great. I think I will definitely go with synthetic fluids.

You can drain and refill, but replacing the gaskets is usually recommended though. I personally prefer the factory cork or cardboard to silicone gasket maker. Transmission (for sure) and transfer cases (usually) will have a filter, and diffs may have an embedded magnet that will need to be cleaned of shavings. I am new to the Montero game personally so I can't speak specifics just yet. In the process of doing this to my Gen2.

I can get 20-21 on extended HWY trips 265/65 R17. Aside from wheels/tires its stock. 16-17 in combined driving.

I'd like to get more out of it. I'd like to flush and switch drivetrain to synthetic that you guys mentioned...been reading about that. I've also been finding some things about how the 6g75 tends to run rich and how a piggy back ECU can help you with 4-5mpg. Not sure about this...still got some reading to do. 25mpg highway would be sick though.

Got the bike itch over the past few months. First saw this Ninja 300 a two weeks ago.

Now she sits in my driveway with the Monty.

Even the dogs approve. Ha ha.

She fits in with all our black cars.

Mr Schnapps and I sit in the garage and admire the Ninja when not riding.

I got a hitch basket from Harbor Freight. It was super cheap. The quality is pretty nice. I figure I'll use it camping and maybe even throw my 50cc pit bike on there.

I also fixed my rear door handle. It was starting to give out the last few months until it just stopped opening all together. I was hoping nothing was broken off inside. So I did a little research and all I did was spray some WD40 penetrating lubricant from underneath and then I heard a pop and the handle started working. I guess with age and weather, water gets into the handle from the top of license plate cover and makes the spring get rusty. Some people take off the back license plate cover or take apart the interior piece and get to it from inside. But I figured I'd just blast it from underneath and it worked. 🏻
