Best Glamping Mat

I was at an REI a few weeks back that had the exped and the new thermarest. Mhiscox is not overselling when he talks about the exped. That thing is amazing. It is huge though and doesn't pack down. The thermarest was not fully inflated and I wasn't going to kiss it, but by the looks it would give my nemo cosmo a run for its money. I think the nemo is still the smallest & lightest so if space is an issue you may want to consider.

one other thing the exped thickness is under rated it seems where all other pads seem to be over rated
when you lay the mega mat down next to another pad its THICK

agree nemo is smallest lightest I could fit 3 nemos in basically the space of one exped mega mat :)

Has anyone compaired the (older?) Therm-a-Rest DreamTime to the (newer?) Therm-a-Rest .

I have a unique perspective in this discussion. Starting last fall I spent a ton of nights on my deck sleeping on one pad after another. No, I wasn't in the doghouse with the wife, I was compiling the Overland Journal pad test in the spring issue. Granted, only a tiny portion of the tests were performed on my deck, but those sessions were the most telling. If a pad sucked, it was sooooo tempting to go inside just 10 feet away. :)

I have slept on both of the two latest versions of the Dreamtime. There is no question which is the most comfortable - the old. There's no doubt which one is smallest - the new. At half the packed size of the old Dreamtime, the new version uses a NeoAir at the core. Awesome pad, but not as comfortable as the big, foam filled pad of the previous Dreamtime. That thing is pretty massive when stowed away. Almost too big for most people.

At any rate, Honu is dead correct in his evaluations of the Exped Mega Mat. That pad is without peer as comfort goes. As he pointed out, the vertical sides are one of the key attributes. That's what I think makes it sleep like a bed, not a camping pad.

If space is not a huge concern, there's no pad that can touch the Mega Mat. However, the Thermarest MondoKing XL is a close second if you like a more firm sleep. At 4" thick it's super comfy, but it does tend to feel more firm than the Thermarest Luxury Map XL. That pad has a slightly softer feel to it due to the perforated "body mapped" holes in the foam. My wife swears by the Luxury Map XL...or did....now she's a Mega Mat convert.

I've professionally tested a ton of products over the years and pads were tough. We had seven testers. Everyone had slightly different opinions. The only unanimous assessment was - Mega Mat is the best. Period.

My wife has become the Princess and the pea as far a sleeping. I'm hoping the Mega Mat will do the trick. If it doesn't I don't know what else to try. Just ordered it online from REI with the 20% discount from the anniversary sale. Fingers crossed.

LOL sounds like typical problem in SF Bay Area.
I am soon to face a similar dilemma. Please post up the result of your experiment...!

Now that I have a place to store deployed bedding full time, I am seriously considering a switch to a pair of mega mats. I love my neo, but it just doesn't compare.

We bought two Exped megamats earlier this year. They are incredible. We are very happy. :)

I just got my Exped MegaMat and slept on it in my living room on a tile floor.
Best Mat EVER

I have a really bad back, a messed up hip and a fake leg that means after 2-3 nights of camping I am usually so sore I am not enjoying a trip anymore.
Since I work nightshift and get home in the middle of the night I figured I would try it out a few nights in a row....made my wife laugh :)
Great sleep and not a bit of soreness.

Worth the money and I am scared to let my wife sleep on it or I will have to buy another one very quickly.

Okay, so we made a three night trip with the Mega Mat and I can report success. No aches and pains in the morning, but most of all no more searching for a solution! If you have the space to carry one (we leave it out in the cab-over and it rolls up a little smaller than a 7'x7' tent) it's the way to go, at least for us.

I spent a week on a Kelty Basecamp laid on top of an army wool blanket, no complaints! Just a little hard to roll up and get back into its storage bag.

I just got a Coleman Quickbed for $22 at Walmart. Much as I love the Exped Megamat, I can't say that there's a huge difference in comfort between these two mattresses. Except of course that the Megamat is insulated. Other than that I would say that the Megamat is maybe 30% more comfortable than the Coleman. I only returned the Megamat because it was too wide for my cot. I miss it and wonder if I should have kept it. But you can think of the Coleman Quickbed as the poor man's Megamat. It is more comfortable than an airbed with vertical tubes like the Intex Downy, but even the Downy is pretty good.

30% is a lot...

I agree! 30% is a lot. Here's an update. The Coleman Quickbed lasted exactly one night. On the second night it sprang a leak and was finished. I returned it to Walmart.

I originally returned the Exped Mega Mat because it was too wide for my cot. I came to realize that there are times when I need to sleep on the ground. I reordered the Mega Mat.
