Best light-weight 1/2" impact?

I've been looking for a 1/2" impact gun I can carry along on the trail -- something light, strong, and not too hungry (in cfms). So far I've been leaning towards the Blue Point AT600; 4lbs, 550ft/lbs, and 3.5 cfm avg. What do you think? A good choice, or are there better alternatives?

Thanks!

What is your source on the 3.5 CFM?

Comparable wrenches, such as the IR 2135TI (3.95 pounds, 780 ft/lbs.) use close to 25 CFM.

I'd *really* like to see an impact gun with the numbers advertised by Snap On (Blue Point) do it on 3.5 CFM. That would be most impressive.:Wow1:

Sorry, Snap-On advertises CFM and SCFM -- the specs for the Snap On / Blue Point ATC500 are: Air Consumption, working, cfm (scfm) [l/min]; 3.5 (25) [99.1].

So yeah, I'm looking for something in the 25 SCFM/CFM range or lower. I have a York compressor under the hood, but running the engine at higher RPMs while working gets on my nerves. :)

I'll take a look at that IR 2135TI. Thanks!

I know that this isn't quite what you're asking for, but I'll mention these for consideration as I've used the 18Volt version and was pretty impressed with it. Over the span of a single day we changed 4 tires in a remote pit on a single battery, and the last tire's lug nuts came off & went on just as fast as the first's. The days of an electric impact being pretty much a joke are gone. That these are cordless is even more impressive.

That the same batteries can be plugged into other tools that I might wish to have along on a trip are a bonus. Even with an on-board charging method their duration of use possibly won't be as great as something OBA driven, but their short term duty cycle could vastly exceed an OBA driven impact.

The 3/8" Ingersoll Rand 2115TI will do anything you need 99% of time. It light, powerful, low air, and small. I find that you can get in a lot more places then a larger 1/2" gun and still get the job done.

I second the IR (I believe mine is a 2131 but it is @ 10 yo) if you want a pretty decent "1/2 that won't cost you too much $$$.

A little over a year ago I had occasion to help with setup of a single wide manufactured home. The guy I was helping brought a cordless impact wrench, I believe a DeWalt, and we did the whole job on one battery. That included removing the wheels, axles, and tongue. I was beyond impressed. After seeing that, I wouldn't even consider an air powered one for trail use.

I've got the Milwaukee V28 1/2 impact pictured above and it's a pretty decent tool. I've also got the 3/8 IR 2115ti mentioned above and a 25-30 year old IR 1/2 gun that is a brute (I've seen it bust things that 3/4" guns didn't). The one I use the most is the IR 3/8 - it's small and light.

The problem with the Milwaukee cordless impact is that it is huge and will not fit in a lot of places. And how many bolts are on our vehicles that need a 450 to 700 pound impact gun. Carry a 1/2" breaker bar in your tool kit and slide the handle of your HiLift jack over it as a cheater pipe if you need that kind of torque.

I do think I'll go and see how well the 3/8" IR does with the Warn PP. It is small and light enought to carry. I've got an old drill chuck out there that will fit it too so if I carried a few drill bits I could drill holes if needed.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm definitely considering the IR 2115 and 2135 (probably bringing the 2115 on the trail w/ a 3/8->1/2" adapter). Should I stick with the TI, or is the PTI and QTI worth it?

Thanks,
js.

Guys,

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I just bought the IR 2125 QTI -- a 1/2" impact with a small 2.5 lbs body.

Thanks,
js.

I have a "Goodyear" cordless impact and couldn't be happier with it. 99 bucks at Pep Boys, it comes with a hard carrying case, sockets and extensions, charger and of course battery

sorry for the blurry pic, best I could find...

If you value your hearding, there's nothing like the MAC "quiet tool technology" I bought my new composite MAC just before they released the quiet version. I was pizzed.
