BFG MT KM2 vs. Toyo Open Country MT

Most reports of the KM2s I have heard say they are downright scary in hardpack snow, unless siped.

I'm betting you can't find a set of KM2's that don't come already siped from the factory. I've seen people respond to KM2 questions even though they are running Krawlers, which do not come siped.

Toyo MT's

I've been very happy with the Toyo's on my Defender 110. I've run them through two Canadian winters and have found them surefooted. Traction, in general, I would rate very highly.

It has been mentioned in previous posts - they are heavy and stiff. On the defender with travel load or trailer they got rid of a lot of the wallow on road. With a load in the dirt they bag out OK and they've proven very resistant to pinching etc. When these wear out I'll order again without hesitation.

I wouldn't, on the other hand, put a set on my Land Rover SWB. I think they'd be overkill for the GVW. I've run the older style BFG MT's on it and have Goodyear M/T' on it now. The BFG's were great on it - bagged out really nicely without dropping too much air. The Goodyears are noticeably stiffer. I'll be looking at BFG when the Goodyears wear out.

There is siping on the center and alternating side lugs. It is not very effective, IMO. Most other tires have more adequate siping. The simple fact is that a tire that will deflect more tends to have a thinner sidewall (more vulnerable) and a tire that has large void areas that provide traction advantages elsewhere will suffer on slick surfaces such as ice. This can be countered to some extent with an advanced siping pattern... which the KM2 lacks.

Some sort of lost...
Funny, my KM2s rock in snow and ice too. I've got about 34k miles on mine now, still more than half tread. They are getting less effective (duh) as they were, but still work as well as/better than the other mud tires I've used.
They are light, they do flatten out well when aired down (pro or con depending on use), wear and ride well, they are quiet (for an M/T). If you want more siping, by all means get them siped. I had a couple other pairs of M/T tires siped and they were incredible, despite a little bit of chunking from lots of gravel. The tire stores in Kentucky don't have a clue what siping is though, unfortunately.
The main thing that I don't like is the sidewall, for use on a heavier truck. They are fairly thin and offer little protection to the wheel, and side stability is not what it could be.

I'll probably go with the Toyo M/Ts next time for the stronger construction, although I'm not excited about the weight.

Tirerack lists the weight for the 255/85r16 KM2 as 55lbs. Toyo lists the weight for the Open Country M/T as 59.5lbs in the same size. Are these weights accurate? If so, is 4.5lbs. more for the Toyo considered very heavy compared to the KM2?

I was referring more to their larger sizes, like the 37"x12.50"x17" tires -

BFG KM2 = 71.6#
Toyo M/T = 92.6#

So yes, in this case they are "very" heavy IMO :).

My dad and I have been getting about 50,000 - 60,000 miles out of our MT's be it on the 4runner or on his f250. I have done some off roading with guys that use the KM2 and I was not impressed. on the other hand, with the cost of toyo tires going up I have also been looking at the wrangler duratrac tires for a substantially lower cost.

I just recently had ball joint work done on our 99 Ford Expedition. I need tires on the fronts at least. I found a decent set (all 4) of Toyo Open Country M/Ts used for $200 on rims...they are described as having 2/10ths left on rears and 4/10ths on fronts. I live in Spokane. We get snow and ice. Will these float me through winter and into spring? Or would I be better buying two new of what I'm running now which is an all season highway tire, Firestone destination LE....opinions please!
