It looks like a dark-morph red tail. Certainly a buteo, so either a dark morph red tail or possibly a Harlan's hawk, which is a subspecies of red tail. I always reserve the right to be wrong though. :coffeedrink:

Matt, we were about 100 yards away from the bird and shooting with a 300mm lens with a 2x extender on the lens.
Believe me, I'm a firm believer about keeping my distance from the wildlife

I love shooting Osprey and they're one of the few birds who are so used to being right along the shore, its surprising how close you can get to them without them even caring or flying away
