BKCowGod's RRC Build Thread (The MechaPenguin)

Automotive ADHD is fun!
So my girlfriend saw it and said "it's short and fat, it waddles down the road, it's awkward until it gets into its element, and it will keep us warm and safe in the worst of weather... it must be a penguin!" Thus the name.

The vehicle in question is a 1993 Range Rover County LWB. I don't think I need to introduce it to y'all... I got it completely stock and disgustingly filthy. A contractor had been using it for work, smoking in it, and spilling paint on it. He had also rearranged the letters on the back to make it a "Rage Rover"

This is going to be a bit of a departure from my previous vehicles... I'm not as worried about the budget, because this one already has its next owner lined up and she promises to let me drive it whenever I want.

Here's the plans.
* General tuneup - plugs, magnecor wires, brakes, change all fluids and filters, etc. It needs it! Runs great and passed smog, but the plug wires appear to have come with the truck 160k miles ago and the brakes are grinding.
* I'm pretending it doesn't need the viscous coupling replaced... Anything else that would cause binding and chirping on hard turns? ABS sensors, mismatched tires?
* Since Jim65 is already forming a posse to lynch me, I will CONSIDER removing the side steps. Or I'll hurry up and find secure storage for the rifle.
* Someone tell me who makes the smallest legitimate 12v fridge. Cold milk and cool insulin are requirements.
* The carpets are plush enough that I wouldn't mind sleeping on them as-is, but I will probably dump a thin foam mat in the back.
* Speakers will be replaced with new components, but nothing fancy. It still sounds amazing with those A/D/S speakers. iPod will replace the CD changer.
* I may finally actually get my ham license and install the icom that has been sitting in my garage for a decade now.

Some questions for the roverfolk:
* Anybody know if there's anywhere in NorCal that will rebuild a VC? If not, who's the source these days for good ones and how much should I expect to pay?
* Could a bad VC cause a hard 2-1 downshift when decelerating through 15mph?
* If the VC isn't bad in the morning, is it salvagable?
* Should I just suck it up and replace the thing rather than spending so much time trying to find ways around it? And no, I have thought quite a bit and I don't really feel like doing the disco TC swap for several reasons.

On the VC note - looking at my driver front tire, it is low and the tread is different than others. I remember on my grand cherokee, if one tire had different pressure then that was enough to put strain on the VC. Am I grasping at straws here?

It could - swap out one of the tires from the rear equal and same thread to front if poss, and see if you still get the binding.

Also have you had a chance to drain the fluid from the Borg Warner (BW) transfer gearbox; check out the color, does it smell burnt and any metal particles?

Replace w/new ATF fluid (check your manual - mine says 9 liter) but don't over fill. Needs to be replaced every 30k miles anyways so about time.

The BW transfer gearbox VC do seize/fail - perhaps your exp of binding is early indication VC going out for MechaPenguin.

There are guys qho swap out their nice working BW for LT230 (Disco TC swap you noted), and leaving them a spare BW for parts taking up garage space; might be able to snag one on the cheap if you really need. Check out www.lrrforums.com (Land Rover Repair Forums)

Also check-out www.nclrclub.org - group of NorCal enthusiast/very family oriented.

I might swap out my BW for LT230 this summer. Already have one sourced out w/shifter from early Disco sitting in my garage in case the BW fail, but it hasn't. Has 130k miles been thru many trails including the Rubicon and the Dusy Ershim. Fluid changes and overall maintenance of the RRC keeps it going.

By the way, nice RRC; lots of potential. I like your "get the basics first" plan.

Good luck!

So, i bought my LWB and the VC failed...tight turns, chirping like a baby chick. I bought a used VC and put it in, but I really wish I had done the LT230 now. Not that the VC has been bad (trips to Seattle, Death Valley and daily commuting) but the LT would eliminate that concern for me... Much like RonCT110 (a personal friend) I have had no real issues with the VC, but I do like the LT in my SWB....noiser, but I know everything is working...

I am getting uneven tire wear also, and will soon see if the VC is going again...ahh, the joy of Rovers.

Nice LWB...on LRRF PCRover may be selling his LWB....he has a nice set up with 3" lift etc....well put together and looks nice.

On my 1995, I have diff guards, side steps, stock brush bar, roof rack and all the light guards...1.5 inch OME lift and a great basin rear drive shaft (which hums, unsure why) and the DII front drive shaft.. It is a great all around vehicle and carrys the family all sorts of places..not a rock crawler, but will get you 90% of the way..and unless you are getting sliders, those side steps are great for walking on when in water/mud and rack access...
Can't wait to see your build, and you should check on NCLR like RonCT110 says....we would like to meet you!

It's amazing what 25 bucks will get you! Hope you and yours get a lot of "out there" fun with it. Diggin' the name and I've got a picture in my head of a hood (bonnet) graphic a la a Trans Am Fire Chicken, modified in a more penguinesque style....a fire breathin' screamin' mechanized penquin!

So much awesomeness contained within this post. The bad thing is that I have a computerized die cutter. And some vinyl. Danger ensues.

Just to confirm - I can simply unbolt and remove the front driveshaft and it will act just like a RWD truck, no? (Assuming I've already tested to ensure the vc is blown by jacking one front wheel, putting the truck in neutral and trying to turn the jacked wheel)

You can pull the shaft and drive 2wd I have been for 4 days now. I'm hoping to put the shaft back in tonight or tomorrow night.

This is probably one of the best ideas I've ever had! I'm really excited to see the results! If you can pull this off, I'll overlook the steps and tell the lynchmob to stand down......

On the fridge, I don't know about them, but I can't help remember reading a doomsday book in high school English class in the 80's about a family in Florida that survived a nuke war. In there was a reference about how the most diabetic quickly died when the fridge electronics were either fried or the house lost power, making the insulin go bad.

To that end, consider one of two options, BUT do not rely on the fridge as the SOLE source of keeping the insulin chilled not to mention the patient alive. Either get two of the fridges or an ice chest with ice (I don't know about how carefully insulin has to be stored) in case the primary fridge fails. Diabetic shock is not something you want to happen on a trip, especially if you break down with a dead battery outside of cell phone coverage.

I sure hope they get this stem cell therapy industry going pretty soon so it won't be an issue. It looks like it'll be an interesting build, though!

Aaaaaaand it looks like my VC may be fine for now...

Note for future travelers - 20psi in one tire and 35psi in the other 3 makes for chirps and grabbiness.

for future reference you can get new VC's on ebay for a pretty good price if you want to keep the VC, same with the transfercase chain .

Q: What do you get when you have a slow leak in one tire and an insurance company settlement check burning a hole in your pocket?

A: Four new Yokohama Geolandar AT-S 215/85-16's

before and after pix will be forthcoming midweek.
