Man I am jonzing like a crack head!!! I would soooo love to be in Baja right now. Going to be a long wait until next winter.
Cheers
We had been warned about the dirt road connecting Highway 5 to Highway 1 eating tires and sometimes worse, but honestly it’s just a bumpy road that the 60 soaked up with tires down to 15 psi. The rest of the drive down Highway 1 is fairly easy, but highway is NARROW! We stopped in for some fabulous Tamales along the way and a fantastic dinner at a restaurant in Mulege, then continued on to Santispac campground arriving around 9:00pm. It was a perfect night with no moon and unbelievable stars.
Correct HWY 5 itself. It turns to dirt before Coco's. Plenty of dirt in Baja, google Earth is your friend...
I have been wearing out GE! Also bought the Almanac. Pretty much taking a few weeks vacation with no plans other than to get to San Felipe for fish tacos with a buddy and start driving south. I have found a few ghost towns and missions to see. Other than than, no plans, no worries.

Not to be a downer but there's plenty to worry about down there. People forget there is still a drug war going on. Lots and lots of murders in La Paz and Cabo recently. Lots of meth use among the fishermen. Not saying you're gonna get into trouble, but always stay vigilant down there. Also there is an on going protest on labor issues. Right now the highway is closed just past San Vicente.
