Bombproof 4.0L ?

Let me first start off by stating that I love my wife, she is an amazing person...

From my personal experiences, as well as from research I've done in the past, the 4.0 iron horses are virtually indestructible, given they are properly maintained. The most common catastrophic failures seem to come from overheating, trans temp issues, and oil loss. Those issues can be mostly avoided by proper monitoring of fluids, and gauges. That's where the concern comes into play.

While the misses is, for the most part, a responsible driver, she has gauge A.D.D... I mean, it's to the point that she can drive 3hrs and never have even looked at the speedometer... which has also lead to running out of fuel a couple of times in her previous vehicle.

I'm currently deployed to Iraq, and possibly looking at just a very quick trip home (1-4 months) before heading back out to Afghanistan. That being said, I'd like to make our family vehicle (The XJ) a little more "Marisa-Proof."

Obviously I know that PMCS is the best formula, and I plan on changing the upper and lower radiator hoses, belt, and whatever else is deemed necessary when I come home... but there have been a couple other things that have crossed my mind as well.

My thoughts?

ScangaugeII (for sure)
Trans Cooler?
Oil cooler?
Larger Capacity Radiator?
Auxilary cooling fans?

Basically I'm trying to afford a little extra comfort for myself in the dependability of the vehicle while i'm gone.

I'd like to keep the budget under $1k, and make whatever modifications easily adaptable/removable in the event that something major does happen.

The Jeep is a 2000 Cherokee sport, Automatic, with 113k miles.

Any opinions, advise, and suggestions on what parts to get, and where, would be greatly appreciated. I'm rather mechanically inclined, so capabilities aren't an issue.

Thanks!

It sounds like you are already having overheating problems?

I think the cherokee cooling system is marginal even in perfect condition. If your radiator is 7-8 years old, I'd replace that. Put in a new thermostat, and make sure the water pump is in good shape. new hoses and a new serp belt. If all else it stock, you should not overheat.:)

The XJ has a "check gauges" light that comes on if a gauge is reading abnormal. Hook that light up to a shocker in the bottom of the seat that will give her a good jolt if she needs it. :D

let her walk for month, it teaches personal responsibility.
I'm worried more about the jeep, then about her having to walk ;-)

BigAl, No issues with overheating, yet... but as you've stated, it being a marginal system at best (IMO) is the reason I'm looking at taking it up a notch or two...

Very tempting!
