British Columbia Circle Route

British Columbia Circle Route Completed

Tomorrow I embark on a 26 day, 5000 kilometer trek around British Columbia. The purpose of the trip is part vacation and part work. Normally I fly to Northern BC when I work but this time I thought I'd take the ferry up the coast and drive back down to Vancouver. While I'm up there, I'll take some extra time to explore.

I will be driving my 2006 Nissan Xterra which I purchased a few months ago. The Xterra is pretty much stock with the 4.0L V6 automatic. I do have the 'Off Road' edition with the locking rear differential which is nice. There will be a mix of accommodation comprising of tenting, sleeping in the truck, mining camp, friend's couch and hotels.

I've got a Garmin nuvi 760 with a Nissan mount and an Icom IC-2720 dual-band radio. I have a Globalstar GSP-1600 satellite telephone and I'm contemplating picking up a Spot Satellite Messenger before I leave.

Update: I just picked up my Spot Messenger. Go to www.whereisaugust.com for my shared page.

I've driven most of these roads before. I usually drive the Cassiar Highway (37) from Terrace to Iskut 4 or 5 times a year. More recently, I drove part the Alaska Highway on the 2008 Alcan Rally (http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15749) with the Sirius Rally Team in car #17.

My itinerary is pretty much mapped out since I have already scheduled field work in the trip. Stay tuned for updates and photos...

That is going to be a great trip!

There are some great fire roads (and hidden lakes) along the way - are you planning on using only major highways or doing a mix?

By the way, I have a collegue who just did a similar trip by motorbike. He said that there were a number of fuel stations that were unexpectedlly closed along the way and he came close to running out a few times. (places went out of business)

He didn't keep track of them and a bike range is shorter then an Xterra, but keep it in consideration when mapping out fuel stops :smiley_drive:

Thanks for the heads up.

We actually encountered this on the Cassiar Highway (37) during the Alcan Rally this year. We left New Hazelton with a full tank and drove past the station at Kitwanga (km 44). The station at Meziadin (km 200) hadn't open in almost two years. When we got to Bell II Lodge (km 308), their fuel pumps had frozen. The next stop at Tatogga Lake (km 456) was closed for the winter.

We made it in to Dease Lake (km 549) for fuel. There was fuel in Iskut (km 469) but we were running behind in the rally and needed to make our check point in Dease Lake at a certain time.

We found ourselves using at least 3/4 to 7/8 of a tank between major fuel stops. It's not the best practice but we did have a 15 L jerry can for contingencies not to mention a convoy of another 20+ vehicles.

Which Wisers?

Which Wisers? I think I remember bringing back two or three varieties of Wisers the last time I stopped into a BC liquor store. Pretty sure it is not available here in the States. Sad.

I'm jealous of the trip dude... swing by Inland Air in Prince Rupert and say Hi... I've seen a few ExPo stickers come through town already this year. Good to see people are getting out regardless of fuel prices.

Woah!

I'm actually booked to fly with you on August 25 or 26 to Falls River!! I'm on the August 24 ferry, arriving at 10pm and staying at the Highliner. After Falls River, I'm off to Terrace.
