Building my first 4x4 van HELP! FIRST POST TOO! Been Lurking

Seats are going in front. Been on MG metal works wait list for brackets for awhile. The price on the seats shot out of control about a month ago so I will be waiting to get a second set for the second row using UJOR mounts when the seat prices settle down. Had to move the battery to the drivers frame rail because I have a slider which does not allow room for the second battery box on the pass side. I drove the van home from the shop today and stomped on the 120 tune and to my surprise instead of rolling coal as usual, there was very little smoke and man does the turbo sound great. I have seen several reports of guys doing a version of CAI and not feeling power improvements but dropping EGT temps. Can't give any EGT data yet but I certainly got more power and significant decrease in smoke output. The difference may be all the performance mods I've done and others didn't? The only part of my engine not altered or upgraded is the long block and the HPOP and injectors which only have 118,xxx mi.

Gotcha, those seats will defintely be a nice touch for the front. Good insight on the CAI mod...thanks!

As seen in the pics below, the box needs to be bigger than the opening. To deal with that issue and still be as sealed as possible and get the box in and out I utilized some aluminum backed butyl rubber that's similar to dynamat extreme. This allowed the corners to flex to conform to the odd shape of the space and make the box as large as possible so the filter could be squeezed in.
The body is made of ABS plastic which was heated and broken with 90 degree edges for stiffness and to allow attachment of the sides with stainless steel rivets.
The orange material seen is rubber that I will try and attach to the top of the box to make a seal against the hood. This will be done after the hood scoop is attached (when it arrives). Got this idea from aircraft engine cowling cooling baffles.
Picture 3 shows a small area that was relieved in the hood to make plenty of room for the air filter.

New hood scoop arrived yesterday. Looks pretty good and to scale? I will have it color matched so it's not so bold. Should do a good job of ramming fresh cold air right up that nice 4" intake. Not bad for 33 bucks shipped from China!
Feedback is always appreciated.

At least 100 views and nobody has an opinion on the scoop? I'm baffled, it's not too late to save me as I haven't cut the hole yet nor is it mounted yet, at least for a few hours from now.
I think that it is defenatly function over form but I have no other ideas at the moment, the position on the hood is certainly awkward to say the least.

It's definitely function over form, and there aren't a lot of options with van hoods. It's far from the only stock or aftermarket hood with an offset air inlet or hump. I don't recall your plans, but I think the hood and scoop might blend together better if they're painted white. You could leave the vents black or paint them body color too.

It's not the end of the world if you try it and decide you don't like it. A new hood, some paint, maybe some air box mods and you've got a different look.

EDIT: I just re-read your post where you planned to have it color matched to the hood. I say try it. It's different, but has an intended function. If it works as designed, mission accomplished. Getting colder air into the engine is a big deal living in the Valley. It gets pretty hot down there in the summer.

Thanks packmule that's exactly what I am thinking but it helps to get other opinions before chopping a square foot hole in the hood.

I agree with packmule, defintely function over form. Its awkward but not terrible by any means as fresh paint will enhance the look IMO. Im curious to see the performance gains and also how it works in conjunction with the vents. Thumbs up for the ingenuity!

I know it doesn't rain much in your area, but something to consider is whether or not water will get into the intake. I think it looks fine.

I like what you did with the cold air set up. I think if you paint the scoop white it will be barely noticeable.

Here it is in white (krylon fusion ******). It doesn't rain much here and the air filter could be covered in a significant rain event.

Damn thing is going to need trailing arms it has so much power now I'm getting what seems like 6-8" of axle wrap and it feels like its going to tear the rear end out when I stomp on it and it starts building good boost.

It looks pretty good color-matched. The louvers make nice racing stripes.

I think that should pull in pretty clean air, sucking dust on dirt roads is a problem and that is a lot cheaper than a snorkel if it works.

Make sure you have a drain hole or two in the box. And maybe a baffle over the top of the element if you have water issues.
