Expedition Leader
Stayed at the Defiance House Lodge in Bullfrog, Utah which sits on a high sandstone knoll above Lake Powell. Bullfrog and the nearby deserts were dead, dead, dead with nearly nobody around in this offseason journey exploring backroads and 4x4 trails I had never wandered before. Explored deserts, desert overlooks and Lake Powell overlooks both east and west of Hy. 276 from Bullfrog to the southern peaks of the Henry Mountains. Magnificent and quiet country until the late afternoon of Feb. 19 when a windstorm of hurricane force winds blew through the area. My truck rocked like a cradle in the sandstorm of a few hours. The next morning the weather was once again calm with intense blue skies. Spring southern Utah wind and sandstorms can be very intense. In years past I have had a couple of campsites/tents virtually destroyed by windy fury that strikes like a rattler. Lake Powell is very low but will rise somewhat with the snowmelt. Who knows if the Hall's Crossing/Bullfrog Ferry will even run this summer. Here are some scenic pictures. Click them to enlarge them.
