I'm also not 100% sold on the drop down tailgate also. While it's nice for sitting on and using as a bench in camp, it makes reaching into the trailer, for something I forgot to pull out, difficult. It has pros and cons that I'll continue to weigh out as I further put the trailer to the test.
Nice build. Great photos and explanations.

I decided to go with a side swinging tailgate for the reasons you mentioned above. My box is about 20" high and with bottom hinges the tailgate would have to open and rest fully down to provide easy access to the box interior. The best thing about a side swinging gate is that you have the interior side to mount things to. My plan is to mount a shovel, axe, fire extinguisher and flashlight. All will be easily accessible by simply opening the tailgate.

Nice build. Glad to see you getting good use out of it.

i am curious and forgot to ask .... are you using the lid often to get to the contents of the trailer? .... at the campsite or packing ? .... I ask because I am considering a "no lid" box for my build .... thanks for any insight ... Matt

I'm guessing from your description you mean something like a rising butt hinge?

That looks close but I don't think they are able to be separated. It looks as if the correct name is Lift-Off Hinge

My trailer's tailgate is held horizontal by two short cables that also keep it from moving side to side very much. Deliberate action can separate the gate from the hinges and allow the tailgate to hang out of the way on the cables. I like the horizontal tailgate as I use it for holding my Pelican case full of kitchen gear.

I only use the lid to load and unload at home and then again at the camp site. I wouldn't recommend it without a lid. Loading just through the tailgate while trying to make the most of the trailer's space is going to be damn near impossible I think. Not only that but how would you coat the inside or do any work to it. It would be like crawling inside a coffin.

Yeah I like the idea of the bolt on hinges for both the lid and the tailgate. I'd have to look into the strength rating before using them on the lid.

A little update. I've been using the trailer for the last year now and am loving it. It will go anywhere I need it to and will carry everything I need it to. Here are a few pictures of the fresh water system I built for it. I also just dropped it off this morning at the bed liner to get bed liner sprayed on the lower half to help protect it from rock chips. When I get it back I'll post pictures of that.
