CA18_Sean's HJ75 Troopy - Build & Restore Thread

And is trying to contact a junk yard in Australia out of the question? I'm not really sure about this but maybe try to contact sleep off road here in Colorado to see what they think they are land cruiser experts they even have a 70 series truck out front of the shop and they might have an idea about a windshield.

That's what I'm probably going to do. I have emails out to a couple junk yards in Australia that sell on eBay. I'm concerned with it making it here in one piece. Glass is fragile and potentially hard to ship... but I guess I'm running out of choices. I was hoping to find a US option but I don't think it's going to happen. The windshield is actually easier to find, those are available in the US.

I am back in Thailand the end of next month and would pack one back in my luggage for you if you found one and had it shipped to my office there. I spend a lot of time there and haven't seen any of these troopers over there to date though.

Thanks for the offer! I'll see what I can find and PM you if I run out of other options :)

I was able to find an Australian wrecker on eBay willing to send my windows :) $300 shipped... Can't really complain about that. My window frame had some rust on it too, so I just had them ship the entire window and frame.

In 3-5 days they should be here. Sweet. Fingers crossed they survive the journey!

If you're paying up front, I don't see why they wouldn't ship. If you find a wrecker willing to do it, maintain a good relationship with them as you will undoubtedly need more parts some day. There are quite a few JDM suppliers near me, so if you are ever in a bind, pm me and I'll see if they can help.

No big changes... Maintenance time! Did oil change, coolant flush, all new belts, radiator hoses, heater hoses, pulled the turbo piping and cleaned it, new turbo couplers, new pcv lines, new fuel lines. Runs about the same. Lol. But at least I have peace of mind that it's all in good working order! Tightened down the valve cover bolts. Had a slight leak, we'll see if that solves it.

Notice the proper curved upper edge of the door glass. Didn't even realize there was a difference!

Chiming in late, unfortunately as I've got a set of parts 75 doors (with glass) here in Utah. Glad to see you sourced some glass and that is cool they were willing to ship over. Mind sharing which wrecker you sourced it from?

I really like the Troopy. How much horsepower/torque do you think it has?
What's your experience been like with the right hand drive and left hand
shift? Not a big deal....easy to get used to?

Thanks,

Thanks,

Thanks man! From what I've read, Turbo Dynamics became DTS in Australia. I could be totally wrong, but DTS claims 110KW (147HP) and 340 NM (250 Lb-Ft). I don't think I'm making quite that, but I'm only running 0.5 BAR (7 PSI) on my boost gauge. Until I get an EGT hooked up I think I'll keep it there. It moves decent, but it's no race car... lol

This is my second RHD car, I drove a converted Nissan 240SX for quite a while. It takes a little getting used to, turn signals and wipers are backwards. Shifting is easy, steering is pretty easy. I found it especially easy with a big tall troopy, I can still see over most vehicles. With the RHD 240sx I found turning left could be difficult sometimes.

Awesome truck. I would kill to have one of those in my collection.

I am going to be starting a build on a BJ74 soon. The customer has a BJ70 that he wants to sell, if you still need parts.

Thanks man! I'll definitely let you know :) I think I'm pretty caught up on parts I just need time to install all the stuff I have. Need to do a front axle overhaul, that's next on my list.

Took it for a spin around the house today just because I haven't had time to drive the old girl. Ran like a champ.

Thanks guys! I've been too busy with working on my 4Runner to touch the Troopy lately, but I will get back to her soon! I did find weld-in rust repair patches from a seller in Australia, I think I will go with them for ease of installation. Welding is something I can do relatively well, panel forming however isn't something I've ever done. Hopefully there isn't a ton more rust that I can't see. I will be media blasting the entire truck to find and repair all the rust soon :) Any suggestions? I'm considering using a mobile dustless blasting outfit here in town. Pricing seems to be in the $1k range...

Here's the replacement panels if anyone is interested. I haven't had him quote me a shipping cost yet, but the pricing seems pretty reasonable (strong USD->AUD helps).

And I'm considering getting a new door skin as well. Mine is pretty dented up. Might be able to salvage it, guess we'll see!
