California C.A.R.B gas cans

I was wondering if anybody in California has heard or received a ticket for non C.A.R.B gas cans. I have read a few problems with the jug style with the long filler hose and the CHP giving tickets.

I've heard stories of tickets at desert races, but never talked to a person that actually got a ticket.

A guy at a Hemet CA motorcycle accessory store told me about his friend who was cited at a gas station while filling a non carb gas jug. Can't remember exactly who cited him but it was a city representative. I do remember it wasn't police, sheriff or chp. Next time I go by that store I'll ask again and post back.

I have 2 carb cans and freakin hate them. I also have 4 Scepters which are awesome. My suggestion is to cover non carb cans while in transit....but that may not help while at the races.

I have some Scribner jugs I have had for years and built my racks around them. I know Tuff jugs make a C.A.R.B approved jug and filler and it is the only one I know of approved. The filler will fit on my Scribner jugs and looks like the Tuff jugs, I might just buy the C.A.R.B approved filler.

Sounds like they encountered one of the town's 'busy-bodies' LOL. Be interesting to hear the details if you can uncover them.

Interesting. Never seen those new fillers. Their site shows an EPA certificate but I didn't see a CARB cert. A few years ago I bought 2 of those jugs and thought they were well made but have since gone to Scepters. With the new fillers the jugs should be fine.

Ya, a busy body. :sombrero: That would sure be annoying to get cited for filling a gas can.

I thought the new regs only made them illegal to sell, not prohibited using non-CARB cans you already own.

I can see it prohibiting use by a commercial entity, that's pretty common to make regs retroactive for commercial use. Load binders being one example.

We have a customer that was cited at Pismo in November for carrying fuel in a Scribner container. We sell both the Scribner utility jugs and Tuff Jugs, and we keep a copy of the state regs posted at the point of sale. It is illegal to sell a Scribner type jug for use as a fuel container. It is also illegal to use these containers to transport fuel. The law does make one exception. You can use them to carry fuel to and from a sanctioned race event.

We carry both the Scribner and the Tuff Jug and yes, the caps interchange. However, putting a Tuff Jug cap on a Scribner jug will not make it legal. The jug must also be red in color and GASOLINE must be embosed on the side.

All that said, until recently I used the utility jugs on my expo trailer. I have never been hasseled over the jugs, but I did end up bagging them just to be sure. I have since switched to Tuff Jugs, but I still keep them bagged.

Is the Tuff jug the same size bottom as the Scribner jugs 9.5 x 9.5 inches. When you say bag them do you mean just a garbage or something like that.

Never been hassled for them on my Jeep. Its such a shame they come up with well meaning ideas that are so poorly implemented. I spill much more with the carb crap than with the old style stuff.

The Tuff Jug has the same dimensions as the Scribner jugs. The only difference is the placement of the handle.

My wife sewed up a pair of ballistic nylon zippered bags. The thought was if they are out of sight, without a warrant, no search, no issue.

Very true.

What a joke CARB is in general.

I wonder what they would say if you had biodiesel in the yellow pre-ban wedco. Probably just keep the bio in the blue wedco's and they'll never know?

If it's do it yourself biodiesel, they would demand road tax and sales tax for all of the miles you've put on the vehicle. We had a customer recently that got dipped and caught with red diesel.

I don't know what Scibner jugs are, other than seeing them on their web site.
So you're saying it's illegal to transport fuel in a pre-CARB fuel can, like a NATO can?
Does that also apply to people from out of state passing through CA?

No, you can still carry it in a non carb container. The issue revolves around showing up with a new non carb container at a place like Pismo. The carb can law has been in effect here since 1/1/2000, so not many "old" new looking jugs around.

So, they're going to cite me because I take care of my jugs and keep them looking new? Can't imagine this would stand up to close scrutiny if one wanted to fight it. I believe the burden of proof rests with the State.
