Callen Style Truck Campers

Hi guys,

I am in the planning stages of building a Callen style truck camper. Since they are gone and can't just go take a look at one, I need help from the forum.

I am wondering how the back doors latch for security?

Is there a "door sill" where a latch can catch at the bottom, or is the bottom free where someone could ultimately pry it open?

Didn't you post this back in 2014? Look back for your answer. Your first question is identical to the first few sentences in 2014. There are several discussions on this forum about Callen. Looks like a cool camper. I had to google it to see what a "Callen" was. Good luck.

I own a Callen. Will post photos of the interior locking system when I return home. (Currently up on Palomar mountain visiting a friend’s ranch)

It’s not robust but does the job.

As promised: Here are images of the (presumably) original locking system on my Callen camper. Check file names for orientation (interior, exterior, left, right, top, base...)

I've owned this shell for 13 years- bought it for travel in Baja along the coast (note: rust!) after Leer shells on previous trucks leaked dust and/or showed stress fractures in the fiberglass after bouncing over rough roads to get to/from the coast from the Central peninsula while carrying gear on Yakima racks.

It's one of those "They seriously don't make them like this anymore" objects.
- Steel frame under aluminum exterior, insulation under the retro wood paneling... it's like crawling into an comfy old fallout shelter from the Cold War era to get out of the wind and rain.

They were built by the Callen family in the 50s El Cajon. Owners often share stories about how they love them and will pass them on to the next family generation of overlanders.

I still see many in San Diego - it may outlive me 😁 (and will certainly outlast my 25 YO B-4000 Mazda truck)

PS- The smashed car is what happened when a tailgater along a wet, muddy Hwy 1 in Mexico hit me as I waited for the red light in the background to change. My truck & the Callen (see images of this in my initial reply) were basically unscathed... theirs appeared to be totaled.

Quite the sad story and demise of Callen Campers. I saw they got bought by some young guys after they closed shop and they tried to revamp it but it didn't last long.
There are other places that build that sort of camper.

I would buy another Callen if I could. I talked with the guy that started making them, and the a pop up came out, the outfit in Benecia CA that folded. I dithered and didn't get either.

I haven't seen a camper that was made like a Callen, there is the Bel-Aire but it is wood instead of steel.

They have a steel frame? I remember them having wood paneling typically, and if that is the case, I don't think a steel frame is a benefit.

Cozy Interior wood panels attached to a steel frame, with insulation between the wood and aluminum exterior.

Vintage & Bombproof.

The only thing I would like is a little bit more headroom. I can’t quite stand up inside. I’d consider some type of Popup modification, but haven’t discovered anyone who fabricates one for Callen, like an Ursa Minor design.
