Starting the process (slowly) of rigging up my Ranger (98, 4x4, 3.0, 5-speed, single cab sport/step side) for cruising mostly around Baja with a small boat. My question concerns drive train mods. What are some of you doing for axles and drivelines? Stock? Any particular aftermarket items recommended (or recommended to avoid)? Any info appreciated.
There are several forums dedicated to Rangers/Explorers, so you should them.
TheRangerStation and
ExplorerForum are two good ones.
You didn't mention what size tire you wanted to run, but I will start there. 31" tires fit as is. Most likely, 32" tires fit as is. 33" tires will probably rub (10.5" wide tires
should fit OK.)
Your Ranger rear axle is probably a 28-spline 8.8. Not a bad choice. You can upgrade to a 31-spline 8.8 from an Explorer for some more strength if you feel it necessary.
The torsion bar front end can be adjusted for a small amount of lift. (Of course, you loose compression travel when you do this.) Depending on your needs, this works fine. There are a couple of aftermarket lift/suspension kits on the market. All but one require some fab work and fiberglass fenders. The
stockish one is one I would not put on my truck.
For shocks, I recommend Bilstein. From your brief usage description, the HD (yellow body) shocks should be just fine. You could run 5160s for a little more money.
Simply put, 32" tires and narrow 33" tires fit fine. You probably need new rear leaf springs, due to their age. Install new springs, adjust the front to level the truck, put on new tires, and you should be fine.
