Wow, excellent question. I have a large family and cook on two 2-burner stoves but having one good one would be kind of cool. I wonder if there are any that are compact enough?

A friend of mine has an older Cook Partner stove. While I really like the heavy duty construction it does not simmer worth a damn. I hate cooking on it for that reason. It either burns everything or goes out. He is not much of a cook himself so I don't think he's aware of the problem and I'm too polite to bring it up.

Some years back I bought the single burner version of the above stove form NT&H. I sent it back before ever using it. Very crude device. Hope that they've improved in the passing years.

Two weekends ago my Camp Chef Sport Stove got pressed into feeding ~80 people when the much vaunted (& borrowed) 12 burner 300 lbs. griddle wouldn't keep more than 4 burners lit, and those weren't putting out much heat. The only thing not cooked on my stove was the chicken, which was grilled on the group site bbq grill, and the tortilla soup, which was cooked on someone's single gaz burner. The chef spearheading the cooking effort was impressed with the stove enough to decide that he wanted one.

Kerry (or, anyone else with this problem) - try using a heat diffuser. These are available at any good kitchen store (approx. $10-20) and work equally well at home or camp to tame the flame. In a pinch, an aluminum or cast iron griddle will achieve the same results. Works great on my Cook Partner stove, anyway. Good luck.

I am digging the partner stoves and Cabelas has the cast iron stove for $99. I had my hands on it yesterday. I will be calling shortly for pricing and such. Will let you know what I find on the partner. Any way keep the suggestions coming.

You can get the cook partner stoves through Adventure Trailers. The cook partner stoves will run you more than $99, but they're lighter and more compact. Plus, they're almost indestructible. In addition, the one with the windscreen will be nice when cooking in the wind.

I have an old Coleman 426D 3-burner stove that works very well with a group of about 4 to 6 well. If you watch gear swaps and Craigslist, they come once in a while. A lot of river outfitters here in Colorado have (or used to have) them and mine came from a guy who was retiring from the biz. I paid $20 for the stove and a cast iron griddle that fits it. You can also watch for the 428, which is a different version of the 3-burner. The body is shorter, so it closes into a thinner package. Not as blingy as the Partner Stove, but mine's about 30 years old and lived ~25 years with a guide, so they are reliable at least.

i like to cook on cast iron also, and it requires a bit more heat than the traditional camping stove to really cook like your home. i cook for as many as 20 people at times, prefer the weekender to the all terrain. they simmer great BTW.

update; i was perusing my local outdoor store today out of boredom and saw a new coleman stove. its a big two burner based on the roadmate body with little 1" legs and two 15k ea. burners, comes with a griddle too.

its new enough that its doesnt show on any websites other than coleman, dont even know the price yet, might be worth a look.
