Camping with a weapon

:peepwall: unless round 1 misfires and you miss 4 times

then, I guess, at least you have a nice heavy blunt object with which to pummel them with. Unless you bought the .357mag Ruger LCR.

:D

I'm with Obgloblahblahblah, I too carry a compact, hammerless, 5 shot revolver for the same reasons. Though mine is an airlight, I think only 11-12 ounces, so not much of a blunt object.:sombrero: The small size means I always have it. I probably would choose to not carry a larger semi in some situations.

A friend of mine used to have a .50 cal DE. I asked why he bought it. He couldnt really give me an answer. He then told me he never really puts more than 2 rounds in it at a time. I asked why again he said it was too heavy to have more than two in it at any one time and when he missed, which he would because that thing was a cannon, he would probably find that throwing the heavy thing at whatever it was would probably have a more desired effect.

Well, after my bear encounter last weekend, Ill probably keep something with me from now on. Havent decided what yet since I really dont like handguns and all I have access to is a Walther .380 but have a few 12 ga shotguns and different rifles to choose from.

A Firearm is a tool like any other tool... for a purpose.

I have always been surprised by the amount of discussion that takes place about, "should I take a firearm, should I not..." A firearm is a tool like any other tool. If you think you need one then take one? I take a can opener to open cans when necessary, and if I think I need a firearm I take one too.... why all the discussion?

Please don't bring logic into this conversation. thank you.

cause, guns are scary..

I dont even need to set up a haunted house to scare people, I just take them into my spare room :smileeek:

haha.

I almost took one last time I went... but I have no room for it... which is surprising cause I am a gun nut. I ran out of room cause I forgot to put it in the truck til the last.. cause I didnt want someone to steal it out of my truck while I was packing...

luckily, I didnt need it...:costumed-smiley-007

Ha! Now that my tiny S&W stainless steel 640 is outclassed by the new alloy 340 models, there's some truth to that! I gotta look into that new model.

I pride myself in my accuracy with that tiny gorilla of a pistol. Over the years I've bet a number of friends free dinner if they hit a target once out of five shots with my 640 at 25 feet. Although Modelbuilder will claim he won that challenge (it took you six to barely wing the target MB!) None, repeat, none have yet to win the bet. If I'm rusty, I'll hit four out of five.

I'll have to look at the Ruger you mentioned.

PS-- I used to nail swinger targets a 50 feet with it also. It often surprises me how anything with a barrel that small can be even fairly consistent beyond 25 feet!

If the anti-gunners can just stay out of these threads then they'd last a lot longer. If you reckon a gun isn't necessary while camping then just move on to the next thread :coffee:

If everyone (pro- or anti- gun) would just answer the question (" I was curious as to how many people camp with a sidearm?"), these threads would last a lot longer!

My answer to the OP: No.

But, I do carry a knife, sometimes 2. Why? Cuz it functions as both a tool and a weapon. I mean, I can slice, dice, puree, whittle, dig and cut with a knife. I suppose with a gun I could shoot, bludgeon and perhaps dig a little. With a knife I can make several weapons. With a gun, I can't. The knife is a lot lighter too, which is nice.

Worst case scenario, if I need a longer reaching weapon, bow/arrow or spear can be fairly easily made. Humans have done pretty well over the last 100K years with a pointy stick in a LOT more dangerous situations than most of us will encounter.

Do I have problems with guns? Not at all. I have several, and I get issued one with my job. I do have a problem with the extreme views expressed by both sides of the gun debate, which I feel is what usually leads these threads into being closed (on nearly every forum I frequent).

Yes I carry a side arm

While i've never had an issue while by myself in the woods (including very remote areas in grizz country in MT) last year when hiking with my GF and my dog (the key here) we were stalked and very nearly attacked by a very large black bear. I'm talking reach out and touch the charging bear close. It was originally chasing my dog and then charged my girlfriend and I. We did everything right but the bear was hunting my dog and was way too familiar with people as it was not frightened by us at all. However, this was a very rare event and I have been around a lot of bears which normally run away instantly. That said I view a gun as a tool and I wish I would have had that tool at that time (a warning shot would have likely scared it off). Even with the bear experience I've had times when I've run across meth labs (definite problem in OR) and some very unstable people in the backcountry and 2 legged critters worry me more than any nature critter.

Where legal, I always bring a gun or three when outdoors. Car camping I take the Mossberg 500 for around camp. My Hi-power 9 stays on my belt, & the Super Redhawk stays in the truck unless I need it. I try to keep the earmuffs right with it. My Keltech Sub2000 in .40S&W is a sweet plinker.
