Can I use a tow strap as a tree saver?

I just built my front bumper and I'm getting the winch all ready to go. Do I need to go out and buy a tree saver or can I just wrap my two strap around the tree a few times and use it instead? It's a standard 2"x2' tow strap.

Yes.... and no :)

Tree straps typically have a higher WLL (Working Load Limit) and are wider to improve purchase on the tree. Tree straps are also designed with minimal stretch. Some high quality tow straps will loose their "snatch" memory if used in winching.

Yea, what he said.

Of course, that hasn't stopped me from using my tow strap(s) as a "tree saver"....or a "rock saver".....or a "bumper saver".....

I've never had an issue. As long as you are using a good strap it should be ok. Just put a few extra wraps around the tree to disperse pressure better.

That makes sense...what about effect on the tree? Won't wider straps with minimal stretch have less impact on a tree than a 2" strap with stretch. I don't know...just wondering...I've never seen the comparative effects.

Well, I'm not an expert but I'd guess that a 20' x 2" strap wrapped around the tree a few times is easier on the tree than your normal 6' x 3" strap.

I still haven't decided what I'm going to go with.

If the standard tow strap stretches it can tear the bark up on the tree. I would get a tree strap if you can, it's worth the investment IMHO.

Here's a test. Have someone half a tree-saver strap around your thigh and then give it a good tug with the winch. Note the results. Now have them wrap a 2" strap around your thigh several times and have a good tug with the winch. Compare results.

:)

(...waiting to see if someone will actually try it :p ) Seriously though - I'm just kidding!!

:jump: :hehe:
Remind me to ask for you if I ever need a tourniquet:wavey: :Wow1:

My "tree strap" is not very fancy. It is just a 2"x10' version of the longer tow strap with the same materials and construction.

I've actually used it as a tow strap (4) more times than as a tree strap (0).

I was in the market for a wider tree strap if anyone knows a good one?

Having said that, if I was buying a tree saving right now it would probably be the one on this page: https://www.expeditionexchange.com/recoverygear/

I can certainly recommend the EE tree strap, quality is excellent.

No, no, no...you have it all wrong. It's a "tow strap" so you have to wrap it around your Tow!
