I picked up a couple of 17' grummans last year that a guy was trying to get rid of...
Thinking about using both to construct a catamaran of sorts...throw a 15 horse in between and go for it...
Has anyone constructed a solid catamaran using two canoes...not talking about lashing them together but solid wood with a deck maybe...?

My thought as an avid sailer and canoeist/ kayaker... I think you be in a lot of trouble when they take on water... either from waves or other. Possibly cover them water proofing them but a lot of work. I'd sell the canoes and get a real cat.. my .02

Are you talking just a power cat? Or do you want to put a sail rig on it? I've thought of doing something like this just for fun, but mostly as a pacific proa...canoe with one outrigger...shunts rather then tacks.

I think i'm onboard with the previous poster if you're looking to sail. Buy a beachcat and re-rig for a less sporty ride if i were you. That way if you're wanting to terrify the inlaws just use the original beachcat rig, but if you're looking for minimulist fast cruising, use a reworked "cruising" rig.

Whether you use a cat, or your canoes, please share your result, and might i recommend "Canoe Rig, the essence and the art" by Todd E. Bradshaw for everything you need to know to power your craft with a homebrewed sail.

I am not interested in sailing it...but powering it with an outboard between them and using them to haul me and my fishing gear up the colorado river...

You are speaking my language

I have had and worked on (on paper and in my mind) the two canoes joined together idea for years, for use while camping on the huge, long lakes in SE British Columbia. A second version was using two cataract inflatable pontoons instead of canoes, since these would be more easily transported in the back of a pickup truck.

I thought about decking two canoes together using two sheets of hinged marine plywood, cross braced with stout aluminum poles, and held on to the boats with webbing straps, so I could sleep and camp on the boats while staying out on the water. This decking would allow me to stay off shore at night while camping, and save on camp ground fees. This would also be especially nice while traveling in black bear country up there. The whole deck would be hinged for transport in the back of a standard pickup truck.

My idea was to use tarped over canoe float bags in both the front and rear of the canoes to keep wave water out of the boats and to also maintain high flotation levels. The mid section of the canoes would have strapped in home-made custom designed gear boxes, lined with styrofoam. These would be accessed thru hatches in the plywood decking.

On the deck, one long gear box with a padded top seat would double as bench seat and also as a bed at night. I would use some model of a small two man tent to put over it to keep out rain and bugs when necessary. The tent would stay down while under power though, to avoid unecessary wind resistance.

A small 5 hp gas engine could easily be mounted on the rear on some kimd of a bolt on transom, with the gas tank also nearby on the deck.

So, yeah, keep thinking about the canoe-a-raft idea......it is doable!

It just so happens...

Canoemaran 2.55.jpgA few years ago I was gifted a rig that fit this idea. It's from a Rhodes Bantam, a plywood boat from the sixties. While a conditional craft, she starts to foil at about 8 kts. forget about the deck a 90% of single handed paddling occurs through the center void...eat your Wheaties. The video and sails up pic are the 2.0 model The sails furled pic is the 2.5. 3.0 with a singular T-rudder is coming soon (been saying that a while now...)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0xTZH3nYAw http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i406/Nufoiler/IMGP6194.jpg

You don't need to even cover the canoe decks. There are air bags out there to fill the space in the canoe. White water canoe guys use them. Basically it is just a big ballon that fills up the unused space in the canoe so you can't get swamped. Check out a white water supply company.
