Canopy vs Awning

I've been using a 10X10 canopy for camping. But, I've seen several awnings on vehicles (off road and regular) and they seem to be becoming more popular, lately. I want to get a new canopy and got to thining about an awning. But, I am wondering what's the advantage of them? A canopy costs just a much if not cheaper than an awning and shades a little more area?

Another + to an attached awning is - it's attached. Already mounted and usually comes with its own cover or bag, so you don't have to pack it or make room for it in your rig. Wall kit's are another matter, though. You'll have to make room for those, if you have 'em.

Bumping this thread back up instead of starting a new one.

I have a square drop I’ve been considering adding an awning to but I’m having a hard time justifying the cost of an awning vs an easy up style canopy. Canopies cost less, cover more area, and are movable as the sun moves. They are bulky but with a trailer is that really an issue?

I’m curious what the paradigm is currently?

Canopy vs awning , what say you?

ground tent vs. rooftop tent, is it worth it? Is it Expo?
But really, awning is usually where you plan to use it, deploys and packs quickly.
Canopy is possibly lighter, a little more work to set up and anchor and many less $$.
When your camp kit, like your kitchen or tailgate are attached to your truck, awnings are pretty great. If you set-up away from your vehicle, a canopy is usually a better choice.

Completely depends on the last sentence above. Do you camp with the vehicle or off of it? Simple. You can get an awning about as cheap as a canopy that will do the job fine. I've got a $150 Amazon one on my van these days and am perfectly happy with it considering I deploy it a handful of times a year.
