canter rims

If you have not read it yet, make sure to check out micklongley's thread on his Humvee-Fuso wheel experience.

Just my opinion, since I looked into that route, is I don't think that is the way to go. One of the benefits of super singles is a match track (or very close track) of the front and rear axles. There is no way to be anywhere near close using Humvee wheels with only a 4.5” backspacing (max with flat centers). Also you would want to go with 24 bolt even spaced or better, 24 bolt paired spacing (the rim bolts not center bolts) for the rim rating so costs would go up. And 16.5 inch tires are becoming dinosaurs. The 90% military surplus is drying up and selection in commercial tires is getting tougher.
Someone like Stockton is going to charge in the range of ATW-Alan-EC-etc approved rims. So I do not see an upside if you are going to spend the $$ it might as well be on a certified/proven rim.

I agree... Certification is a very good idea.

I finally found a couple of tires which meet the weight requirements for my 8500lb rear axle in a 16". I am really digging Alan's shiny wheels! Time to bring me back to reality as I am sure the diameter is way too much? 38.5x14.5 16

With both those tyres you are going to possibly need wider rims than Alans bling wheels sorry to say. It would certainly look mean though.

Going to rims wider then 8 inches (say 10"-12" for the above listed tires) makes it easier to get your front & rear tracks perfect with 'flat' centers BUT you might run into brake drum clearance issues with 16 inch diameter rims. Most 16" rims drop down to around 13"-14" in the center so depending on the backspacing you use, maybe not enough room ? ?

38" tyres aren't a problem dia wise, but you may start running into problems with the width @ 380mm.. on the front end that is. I ran 11.00R16 XL on my last truck, and man were they the business offroad.. but was only getting about 35000km out of them, and they were rag'd by that stage.. that was also on a fg649, with the 4D34t, and 5.714 diffs. Ran 100km/h @ 2500 (bout perfect for the trusty old 3.9L).
Guess what I'm sayin there is that on the US fg140 I think they run 4.875 diffs? Might be getting pretty fast on 38s.
But if you are looking to go that size, try find some surplus 325/85R16 XMLs.

Another flat tyre, the second for this set. After all the way to the Top and back and not a problem with a tyre, the wife goes shopping and next morning one of the front tyres has a slow leak. I suppose it was for me as well as she had 1000 litres of diesel on board when she came home. It looks like a sharp stone has been driven through the front tyre. So pull it apart and put a patch on the leak and inspect the balance beads. They look no different to when they were first put in (as in no breaking down) and I can see no marks in the tyre from them being in there. Still loving them and would recommend them to anyone that asks. And yes I do air down and up and have not had a problem with any valve cores.

Hi Dan,
We have been trying balance beads in motorcycles and 4x4 tyres and also found them very good!

Hey guys

Great forum loads of info. Bought myself a 1993 4X4 Dualcab Canter about 4 months ago. Got a million plans for it like most but the bank balance limits my spending.
Had 4WD wagons but this is best vehicle so far for taking the missus and 3 rugrats camping. We just pull a camper trailer and load up the back of the Canter with anything
that don't fit in the camper trailer.
Anyway I am looking at changing to single rims all round. Mainly to lower the rpm's on the motor but also want to take the Canter onto sand like Fraser and Moreton.
Took the Canter to a weighbridge and it comes in at 3020 kgs. Currently only has an alloy tray with a steel frame around the edge and an alloy headboard.
Was going to stick to original rims and change tyres to either 8.25r16's or 9.00r16's but I don't know if the 9.00r16's still exist.
I found this forum and I thought why not get taller and wider tyres at the same time that's if alan still makes them?
Also the ride is rough as nuts at the moment cause it has standard suspension. ATW have bought out coil suspension all round for $25000 but I can't
afford that. There is a mob in Brisbane here who put in longer leafs in the front for just over a grand. what do you think?
Cheers and hope everyone has a Merry Xmas

Firstly... welcome to Expo Vic.
If you search this forum you will find quite a few threads on singles and suspension mods.

Personally, if I were in your position I would look at the alloy rims that Alan sells and derate the truck to 4495 Kg GVM, which would make insurance and rego cheaper and negate yearly/2 yearly checks of the truck.
I have coils on my truck, and they are great, but as you have mentioned, they are not cheap. ATW also do parabolic springs for the Canter, if that is of any interest. Definitely more than the grand you mentioned, but are a tried and tested solution.

Hey thanks for the welcome skifreak (sorry don't know what your name is)
Yes I will definitely be giving alan a call but probs wont be until after Xmas. Kids equals presents which equals money.
I bought the truck already de rated to the 4495 kgs so that saved me a **** load of trouble. Yes I have been researching the parabolics.
They look like a lot more affordable option.
