Carburetor VS TBI Fuel Injection

Hey Mmuthart,
Thanks for the info. I have chosen the Good Year Dura Tracs 285/75R/16`s on AR23 Rims. This combo gives me the best load rating for a loaded out FJ60. I just did a nice tune up on Zevro installing MSD Blaster Coil, Summit Racing wires, Mallory Cap and Rotor, Accel ignition modual and Accel plugs. I also indexed my plugs using Summits index washer kit and man di it really wake up the TBI 350. At best guess using "Elenore" our GPS the mileage has jumped to 15 in and around the island. My guess it would greatly increase on the interstate once we get back to the main land. Next all the "Smog" gear comes off so she can breath a lot better.

The original Aisin carb on the stock 2F is about as simple and bulletproof as a good carb can get, works well in all conditions, and is easy to re-build in the field if you have to - but since you've already got a TBI cheby engine there's no point in switching back to whatever carb would fit on it.

Looking for bigger rocks.
Also Holley also offers a 650 CFM version that I am entertaining. Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge on these?

I have ran the off road Holley. It works well with tuning but it was nothing like fuel injection of any sort.

Thanks everyone for your input for the TBI. I will keep it on but I think I will at least get rid of the air pump and work on ways to let it breath better. I found an extra computer for $100.00. So I will pop it in and make sure it works well and then vacuum seal it for my spare parts box.

Thanks again

I would put it in an anti-static bag and absolutely make sure it's padded, just for insurance.

shoot I'd switch to tpi before I switched from tbi to carb.

there are just no advantages to a carb on a stock block, other than smelling bad. Yes it is simplier, but a spare tbi jet will cost you about 10 dollars at a bone yard.

Hey Zimm,
At 50 I certainly remember Carburetors, the good ones and the bad ones. The best one these days would be the Edelbrock Performer Off Road. Completely tunable and you can adjust for high elevation 9000+ feet, in 10 Minutes. I ran a 406 Small Block Chevy in my old FJ40 and never had any issues and got 18-20 MPG running 33x9.50`s Granted TBI`s you don`t have to adjust but I think you are still limited as to the elevation you can go before the computer say`s “Where the hell are you?”. I like the TBI and seem to perform just fine but it really lacks on power when you need it. I`ve looking at various web sites and there are mods you can do to get it more air flow. Also Holley also offers a 650 CFM version that I am entertaining. Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge on these?

then its so old you forgot :)

seriously. no carb can do what high pressure and a hand full of sensors can, and any FI system is more reliable than a any carb. if you like to tinker, get a laptop and tinker thru the obdII port.

Hey Zimm,
What`s a Lap Top? LOL, Yeah perhaps your right. Speaking of tinkering, I just bought my wife a 1975 Porsche 911S for 2K.
