Check this one! 1990s VW LT 4x4 available in the USA

The VW LT wasn't really a joint project with Steyr - the relationship was more like with the VW Syncro. Steyr made a 4x4 version called the "Noriker" which had straight portal axles and was going head to head against Unimogs - unsuccessfully. Norikers are really rare. They were only sold by Steyr - not VW though.

This appears to be just straight axle (no portals) and it looks like the rims are 6 lug type - so the axles aren't gwagen based - so I doubt its related to the Steyr project.

They should sell it up in Canada as they only have a 20 year waiting period up there.

Oh how I wish more Noriker's were around. Definitely would give Pinz 710's and Volvo C303's a good competitor.

PS--I have family up in the Skagit Valley. Great place!

Importing into the USA

Just to provide a little info to those who were questioning about being able to import into the USA or Canada. To import this into the USA will cost approx $15,000 - $20,000 and at least 1 year in time and effort should you find a place that is willing to assist. It is quite an extensive process as the vehicle is not on a list of acceptable cars and as such would have to go through all the crash tests and so forth by a firm that specializes in this type of thing. It is a great vehicle but that is the only drawback. After being 25 years old it is not a problem. Going into CANADA is also tricky as they do allow for imports after being 15 years old but would also have to have numerous modifications done to it prior to being allowed. What a shame as the LT 40 is an incredible machine.

Michael,

Can you provide us with a reference for this fine? I could not find anything on Google. Seems a bit high to me.
Christian,

Sorry, I have not seen your post earlier. $250,000 actually came from US customs. When I moved to the US in the late 1990ies, I brought my Land Rover Defender with me as I was wrongly informed that I will be able to drive it here as long as I'm in the US with a visa and not as a permanent resident. Turns out this rule just applies if you work for either government, not if you are employed by the private industry. I was however able to legally (more or less, as I had not fully completed my move to the US, I claimed to have my residence in Switzerland) import my vehicle for one year as a tourist vehicle. US customs stated very clearly that I would face a up to $250,000 fine should I sell the vehicle or fail to re-export out of the US before the year is up. After 360 days, I put my beloved Landy in a container and sent it back to Switzerland, where it is still in the possession of my Dad ... and I went ahead and bought a Jeep :elkgrin: So I never found out if the $250,000 are for real.

As for the vehicle itself, just pick up a nice used Westfalia and swap in a 2.0 turbo diesel and some Jeep axles. Get the same result for half the money, plus no issues with titling it.

At which point your $15-20K is a drop in the bucket. To pass the crash test, several vehicles of that type must be destroyed

Are you trying to indicate that it has portal axles? It is very obvious from the pictures that it does not, that front axle looks like a run of the mill D30. And if I wanted portal axles, a close friend of mine designs them for a local fabricator. Order from Germany, that makes me chuckle....

I was referencing the VW Noriker which has portals (my post was supposed to read "Add" not "And"--sorry);

Cool to hear your close friend designs portals. <thumbup>

Wolfgang at Tibus makes some awesome stuff too;

Just here...
Holy high center of gravity! This cannot come into the States legally, so why waste the time and energy. For the price they want, you can build a killer US based van here.

I saw this one or its stunt double today in S. OR. Headed towards the coast on 199 just before Cave Junction on the right back in a field. Had a trailer on my truck and the field was full of cars so I didn't pull in to check but it sure looks like this one. Or the US is being invaded by cool VW campers.:drool:
