Travis,

Your rig looks great! One question, does the fuel door on the trailer go to an on board spare fuel tank? That'd be a great way to carry extra fuel without eating up space in the trailer. Great looking rig makes me sorry I'm getting rid of my XJ.

Cya,

jr

Thanks! The fuel tank has been removed, but I am planning on adding a water tank in its location.

Put the topper on it today. I painted it black because it was quite a bit cheaper and easier than painting it silver. I figured wranglers came with black tops, so hopefully it wont get too hot inside. I won't be sleeping in it too much, so it shouldn't be much of a problem. Some of the paint on the inside of the topper was flaking off, so I cleaned it off with a wire brush. I am going to repaint it white on the inside.

I love the look of the black but I was thinking in the terms of heat for sleeping in it ;) Your doing a sweet job, the set up looks great!!

looks great, what do you figure it weighs?

It doesn't seem to weigh much at all. Unloaded it is nearly perfectly balanced, and I can roll it around with one hand pretty easily. I am going to add some weight to the tounge, and a water tank to help put some more weight up front. I need to weigh it, I would hate to guess and be wrong. It seems to weigh about as much as my brother's 5x8' utility trailer.

I won't be sleeping in it much, mainly using it to haul camping and fishing equipment. I have been using it quite a bit to run errands like pick up lumber, straw, topsoil, rock, etc... Found out by accident that it can handle 1 ton of topsoil without too much trouble.

LOL, Yeah I have a CJ-8 trailer to match my CJ. I hauled 1250 lbs of lumber plaster and tile, to the dump, when I remodeled my bathroom. The weight balance issue is really bad on SWB trailers. My trailer hauls better loaded then empty. It was balanced perfect till I put a 35" spare on the back. Then with out a load in the front it started to sway. I am planning on installing fwd mounted, fuel and water tanks to add more tongue weight when it's empty. I removed the huge spare and it is good for now.

Mine likes to bounce around quite a bit when it is empty, due mostly to the long soft springs. It never gets out of control, and I've learned to live with it. I'm hoping the topper will add enough weight to calm it down a bit.

You really have to pay attention to the way you load it, with too much weight on the rear the noise coming from the pintle hitch will drive you nuts.

I'm going to start on the tounge box soon, and keep a large chain in there to use to lock it up at work. That should help quite a bit. I need to get the water tank done soon as well, anyone know a good source for tanks? I am going to check out West Marine as they usually have quite a few.

:archaeolo My trailer weighs about 1000 lbs when it's loaded and I try to keep the tongue weight at 110 lbs

this makes for super towing and allows me to move the trailer around the camp, by myself

I think the experts say to keep the tongue weight at about 10% of the gross weight for general towing !!
