Ok... Here's your pop up camper built into the XJ. Mine has auto furnace, 3 burner stove, double sinks, water tank, 3 way refrigerator, and a nice bed for my wife and I over the top. Fully insulated for below zero comfort. Can't even feel it when you drive. www.phoenixcampers.com Thanks for taking a look, and keep on jeepin!!

That is awesome. How much would something like that cost, can we see inside pictures, and could you do it to a Jeep Liberty?

XJ pop up camper, done!

Has anyone ever done something like this? It seems like it's totally do-able if you add an internal roll cage for some roof support.

Please don't post the "Jeepagon" thread...seen it and I'm not looking for that. I'm thinking more about the Dormobile type camper where you could cut a hole in the rear section of the roof and then pop the top either straight up or at an angle which allows a thin foam mattress to be placed on the roof area.

The idea is that you could then stretch a tall person like me (6 foot) the length of the Jeep roof since you can't do it from the passenger seats - back.

Any thoughts? Basically take a dormobile top and put it on a Cherokee.

EDIT: I guess it would be more like a flip pac than a dormobile. Basically attach the flipping part to the roof, cut a hole in the rear cargo area roof where you climb up, and it would fold out to the front. This idea could work for ANY SUV!!!

I like that, but Im not crazy about carving up an XJ to fit a camper in it. I wouldn't feel comfortable with that, especially as a safety aspect. I'd have to add a custom cage for me to feel safe driving it. I'd be more inclined to do like the O.P. said and building something similar to a Dormobile, with a hinged roof kinda deal. But thats just me. :sombrero:

I talked to UrsaMinor last week and they said that they have 2 different prototypes of the popups.

He said that they are working out some details and put me on a mailing list for when new info is available.

Yep, im bringin it back from the dead.

Did any of you guys ever move on the ideas talked about here?

I just started my conversion, well sort of. Ive been using the xj as my expedition rig for about 5 years. In october I started a diesel conversion, and now its back on the road.

We have a big trip planned for june, about 2000 mostly 4wd miles, over the course of 3 weeks. I decided to gut the jeep and convert it to a full time camper, as thats what its used for anyhow.

I am 6'2" so this poses some space constraints. i devised a cot system that will sleep my wife and I comfortably inside the rig, but i want some headroom for cooking, changing, etc.

I have a few pics of the progress, but Im not sure if I should start my own thread?

I'm trying to combine a roof top tent and the jeepagon idea (without cutting a hole in my roof). I'm in the same situation as you are; trying to convert the XJ into a full-time camper. Here are a few pictures from a few weeks ago, these do not show the extended slide (I'm 6'4''), the tent and rain cover I'm working on, or the hinge adjustment to make it taller. It's starting to take shape, however I still have many hours to go...

way cool. is that a vanagon top?

my goal is to stay inside the jeep. we do alot of snow camping, and it would be nice to be contained. I did the RTT thing for awhile, it just doesnt work well for us.

It is a vanagon top from a '79 I believe. I can't blame you, I would rather have an inside setup as well but unfortunately I think I would need a full size van. I was playing around with the idea of having a rear slide such as this one:

Pick up a spare hatch, build some heavy duty slides and enclose it in dibond. It might be fun for a future project. Keep me updated on your progress, I'm curious to see what you end up doing,

I can't remember which forum I was on, but yes someone did this. I'm thinking it would have been on jeepforum as that's the only forum I spent any time on when I had my XJ. They had a pretty detailed write up.

But as was said above... much easier/faster just to buy an autohome tent and be done with it.

Edit, I see stomperxj provided the link to that.
