Truck Camper Magazine has an article that details how they chose a new truck for use with the slide-in campers they test. They're quick to point out that the right choice for their needs may be different from what others need. But everyone should take the following choices into consideration:

Which manufacturer?
Gas or diesel engine?
4x4 or rear wheel drive?
Single or dual rear wheels?
Special equipment, such as off-road or towing packages?
Long bed or short bed?
Regular, extended or crew cab?
Color and trim level?

The magazine staff chose a Chevrolet 3500 crew cab, gas engine, 4x4, short bed, single rear wheels.

Nice outline of the process they went through and the rationale for each choice. As he and others have stated, it is important to get what makes sense for the intended use and what suits your desires.
