what is the ring gear diameter on a JK D44?

Not certain. I know there is something different about the JK D44 but am not certain if it is larger than the traditional D44 or if it is just the carrier and bearings that is different (larger).

A traditional D44 is slightly larger than a 8.25" IIRC (8-1/2" vs 8-1/4" - or something like that). Not enough of a difference to bother swapping but slightly larger nonetheless.

i wish i knew a little more about the D44 JK. if it was a full floater as well it would be worth swapping them.

there is an insurance auction in colorado and they always have lots of Rubicon JK's going through. It would be the perfect place to get the t-case and axles, then sell the rest of the junk off. especially that crappy 3.8L V6.:coffeedrink:

It's too bad that Mopar up'ed their prices on the JK axles that they sell to us hobbyists. They make a SF Dana 60 for the J8 JK with a 5 on 5.5" pattern (and a kit to adapt the front D44 hubs).

It's SF but a dana 60 so plenty strong for a Commander IMO.

You know, given a choice between the SF JK axle and the FF XK axle I'd be inclined to run the JK axle just for the options of getting what you want with that axle.

Think about what I said about the JK vs XK axle and aftermarket shafting above too. Maybe it'll work? Must be someone local you know that you can go take a few measurements off and/or do some disassembly and parts comparing some afternoon?

i have a friend i 4 wheel with that has a JK rubicon. i should take some measurements. i just hope the axles will not die under the weight of the commander.

I wouldn't stress about the JK axles under a XK too much. Remember, the old FSJs used old style Dana 44s and they were fine. They weigh about the same. As long as you keep a sane tire size like we discussed elsewhere and are realistic about where you can go I wouldn't give it a second though.

If you wanted to do something for piece of mind, add a truss to the axle tube(s). The internals will be fine as long as the housing doesn't flex.

does anyone know the specs on the 8.25" carrier. specifically the bearing sizes.

i'm looking through my XK service manual to see what i can find out about my axle.

thanks. i'd love to know if they will fit.

the only problems i remember with others having with the old 8.25 axles is breaking c-clips. i can't remember anyone break a carrier.

With the full float I doubt you'd ever break a C-clip - if it even has them any more (don't think it would - spindle assembly retains the axle location, no?)

That diagram you posted doesn't seem to have any C slips indicated... don't know how accurate that picture is though. Is that from your FSM?

no the axle does not have c-clips. i've had the cover off to install my diff. cover and change fluids a few times.

what i was referring to was the only thing i ever remember breaking on a 8.25" are c-clips. i have never seen a center section break. since i do not have the c-clips, it should be a pretty strong axle.

going though my parts book right now....

I show differential bearings for a Dana44 and the wheel hubs for an 08 commander. that is all. :(
