CL Morgan's Cheap Jeep Build

Loving your build.

When I was Jeep shopping, two sides of me clashed... buy used and upgrade away, or buy brand new and move slow.

Brand new won out in the end, but I often wonder where I'd be in a build if I had decided on a TJ/LJ/XJ base instead of my Rubi.

Thanks Brian, I've done both styles, no preference both are rewarding.

Been a while since updating my build thread also just fixed a bunch of links for pics. Anyway spring is near and time to get back to working on this jeep. Since my last post many months ago a simple update & radiator replacement on the WJ ended up replacing decade old TeraFlex lift with upper/lower arms + rear upper three link with Rusty's, JKS front trac bar........

Next to do on Cheap Jeep is drop t-case skid, replace mount & adjust Novak Shifter. After things warm up/dry out a bit swap axles & suspension.

I've got four Jeeps in the family all of whom are vying for attention :)

Today my father's last Jeep a 1995 heavily modded street/trail YJ - more electrical cleanup plus drivers door latch rods.

The previously mentioned 2001 WJ needs ball joints.

My father's first Jeep a 1959 ish CJ-6 hasn't been on the road or trail in years so everything needs attention. Pic is from her better days.

Last is the Cheap Jeep TJ

Reminds me of something my father said a year or two before he passed on "I've got more projects than I got time"

Nice build up on your Cheap Jeep. I need to order a new top for my LJ, and I am seriously looking at the TrekTop NX. Thoughts on yours? I like the look, fit and function, but not sure about the flip back top.

I'm thrilled with it & do love the sunrider feature, previous LJ I built early 2005 I turned into a RubiScrambler with prototype GR8TOPS half cab.

I want the GR8TOPS Safari Cab so bad my teeth hurt...I just cannot justify the $4k for a top....doesn't matter how awesome it is. Thanks for the feedback on the NX. I guess I will be ordering one next week once my LJ is finally road worthy.

Oh I know what you mean on GR8TOP's LJ Safari top - just needs some LR Defender alpine windows to be perfect ;)

Something like these designs I was working on when I owned a custom shop? :safari-rig:

I was thinking about building a JK8 and this top to create my ultimate expedition vehicle...

Very Nice - I think the LJ is a better platform than JK as axles and engine seem better suited for street/trail.

My Ideal would be find a clean unmolested 6 speed LJ with safari top, GenRight Safari tank & VW TDI conversion http://cotybuilt.com/hardware.html

Should still be cheaper than well sorted NAS TDI Defender 110.

Nice, I had not seen those. My son and I are planning diesel conversions on both our LJs and have been watching the Kabota conversion threads.... but the VW seems like a really nice option. His college commuter is a Jetta TDI and just sold mine in favor of my STS-V :smiley_drive:

I also been watching the Kabota TJ thread and was thinking of doing that to the Cheap Jeep but then it wouldn't still be cheap :)

Maybe not....but doubling fuel economy is in the category of "cheepish" :)

Us too. We both like the simplicity of a diesel, and we are ultimately building these LJ's to drive down through central and south America...hence the need to perform a diesel swap for an engine with widely available parts. You can find diesel a lot more readily than petrol.
