Cleaning a camping stove

So after many, many, many trips I have noticed I really need to clean my Coleman stove. In order to understand how bad I need to clean it you need to understand I have never cleaned it, ever. :Wow1: In fact I rarely have even wiped it down. Chilly, deer, stew, you name it and there is some of it caked on it...

I was gonna spray it with oven cleaner but will it take the paint off? What should I clean it with that will not take the paint off but will take off 20+ years of baked on food?

I bought some spray on Easy-Off oven cleaner, sprayed it on, let it sit, hosed it off and man that bare metal was clean. Easy-off cleaned it a little too good. I repainted the stove with high temp BBQ paint & white Zebra stripes.

A jack hammer maybe? Or a solvent called Goof Off. Its pretty potent stuff and might take paint with it, but I'd say that if you put it on a cloth then scrub the baked on junk with it to soften it up a bit, then take a scraper of some type to it that ought to do the trick.

Soak it with WD40 and let it sit for a few minutes and wipe it off, repeat if necessary. I use this on all kinds of metal gear.

Sounds strange but I have had success with commercial Toilet Bowl Cleaner. We used it extensively on restoring Hard Water/Calcium build up on drinking fountains and stove tops. Spartan brand Non-Acid Bowl Cleaner NABC works well. Vinegar and Lemon juice and Baking Soda if you want to use alot of elbow grease.

oven cleaner. just don't leave it on to long. rinse and repeat if needed.

Simple green? Also, the WD40 doesnt' sound too bad either. I don't think it will ruin the enamel/ paint.

Also, remind me not to eat anything cooked on that stove.

You're suppose to clean a camp stove? :sombrero: That's like cleaning a campfire. I vote for buying a new one.. thats usually my excuse for new gear.

A couple of layers of wet paper towels laid over it and let the universal solvent do it's stuff.

If it's real bad you could take the burners and stuff out and soak the body in a tub of hot water.

there is oven cleaner that is safe for the exterior of the oven, look for that, it should work good. WD 40 would do it. Or just leave it, and tell people "sure you can borrow my camp stove" Then take pictures of them when you hand it over.
