Comfort Camp food

What foods do you remember from your early days camping?

For me it's canned stew and canned Bacon.

Both staples from my early days, since we never had coolers everything had to be canned or dried.

For backpacking we had a lot of Knorr Swiss or Lipton's soup mixes, this was the pre Mountain House and Raman Noodles era.

Car camping opened the door to canned delicacy's. Like the canned B&M brown bread. I still love to pop a can of that stuff after dinner for a quick dessert.

Other stuff was not so good. One time my friend brought one of those whole canned chickens, it was ....... memorable.

So what were you eating when you started out???

We always ate like kings on car camping adventures. But my early days of backpacking/backcountry skipacking: Pemican...sucked. Oatmeal...Ok. Instant soups as you mentioned: Ok. Lots of GORP to fill in the gaps ;-)

My dad always brought canned Anchovies when camping. I think he ate them mostly to gross out my sisters. Which I thought was cool!

Kraft Mac-n-Cheese Deluxe and a package or two of Taco Bell Hot (now "Fire") Sauce is one of my all-time favorites.

I was thinking back to camping as a kid and back then meals were just "fuel" before going back to the creek or riding around the campground. But I do remember my mom making amazing chicken legs on the campfire seasoned with cayenne pepper.

Plus there was the classic Ichiban (which we always called Ichy-bum) soup. A chilly night never went by without an ichy-bum ;)

As I got older, I went through stages. First it was the thick t-bones with pasta. Then it was Backpackers Pantry Thai Chicken with noodles. Mmmm. Now it's a mix and more of a focus on finding local food along the route.

There were two staples that were always part of camping with my parents though. My dad had a bottle of homemade wine (aka rouge diesel) and chocolate. He always makes the same joke everytime: "Do you want male or female chocolate?" The difference you may ask? Male chocholate has nuts. :p

Rye Krisp, gack. I would get so sick of eating that.
One treat I always carried, weight be damned, was one small can of sliced cling peachs. Nothing ever tasted better than that can of peaches, half way through a seven day trip.

Funny you mention the peaches...they're along with canned pears in for our upcoming trip. Beats bruised fruit :p .

Wasa crisp gets pulled out after the loaf of bread has gone stale :yikes:. It's great for dieting too...because you have to eat it slowly ;).

Bisquick everything if baking.
Poptarts. Frosted brown sugar cinnamon. Always had em camping.
Cans of peaches, as someone already mentioned.
And last but not least, hamburger meat with carrots, onion, potatos with a dash of flower wrapped in foil and thrown in the fire. Yep, the good ole
foil-a-meal.

Good topic

We called that hobo stew, and ate it often.

When my grandpa was still around, his big thing was bringing vienna sausages and saltines. And store brand sodas. Surprisingly, it wasn't as horrible as it seems like it should have been.

My dad's big thing has always been cooking up Dad's Breakfast Hash. It basically consisted of whatever is handy being thrown into a big cast iron skillet, fried around, eggs scrambled into it, served with tortillas. Always good.

We also used those campfire pie making things where you put a couple slices of bread with stuff in between them and clamp it shut. We made pizza-type sandwichs with them and grilled cheese things, and also made pies pretty often.

For me, what I have always enjoyed the most while camping, though, is that first cup of coffee in the morning, usually just as the sun is coming up. I typically was always the first one up and often, when camping with my parents, my mom was right after me. I've always had a very close relationship with my mom and having coffee with her while out camping ranks up there on my "comfort" list about as high as anything can possibly be.

My dad always picked up a ring of bologna for our adventures. Sliced with a pocket knife, it was so...anti mom, delicious:)

All from my boy scout days.
1. Saltines with spam, fig newtons, and granola bars for lunch
2. Cheese and mac with a can of chilli.
3. French bread pizza toasted by the camp fire with camp made foil reflective oven

I loved those things. We mostly used them for pies. Cinnamon swirl bread with apple pie filling worked great...

One of my favorites is the B&M canned bread.

My earliest recollection of camp food............

Is probably Bacon and Eggs.....and coffee............cooking on the open fire, first thing in the morning! The crack of Dawn!

I was probably 5 years old or less. Sleeping in my Dad's old WWII War Surplus Tent including all the gear. Canvas! I can still smell it! I loved hearing the rain hit the canvas and being all warm and dry in my WWII sleeping bag! How Kewl!

Near the Sol Duc Hot Springs ........on the Olympic Peninsula

My little friends and I would swim and play for hours in the Hot Springs Pools!

I was hooked from then on!
