Commuters

Lets see your ride to work...

My shop is about a mile from the house. I was feeling guilty driving my trucks that far, putting the wear and tear and never warming up, so I brought my old Schwinn Moab out of retirement and put on a few commuter goodies. Total investment, less that $100. ;)

Gotta love the green. If I get bored, I am going to strip the frame and paint is flat tan.

I had this headlight laying in my mtn bike bin. No idea where it came from, but it works just fine.

Feel the love of the side basket! Holds my SandStorm briefcase like a glove. Good thing, cause the bag is worth more than the bike ;)

Feels good to be riding a bike again. I even ride it to the athletic club up the hill.

I don't commute in mine (40 mile one-way commute...with no shower facilities at work!), but I do use this for everything from my usual bike rides to Redbox rentals.

Just moved so I am now within 14 miles each way instead of 65.. back to commuting via bike! My previous schedule had me doing about 27 - 48 a day so I am ready!

Here's mine - 15 miles each way - only twice per week right now, but I'm trying to carve out the time for a third day.

Sorry for the blurry blackberry photo, it's a 2000 Specialized Rockhopper - pretty basic Shimano LXdrive train with a Judy upfront and hydraulic discs. Actually fits in well with some other topics lately - when I bought the bike in 2001 I hesitated - I've been mtn. biking since 1988 and had become used to all XT or better and constantly upgrading everything, because I felt I had to.

But this bike was my first grown up purchase (read: with kids) so budget was the primary concern. In all honesty, speaking as a guy who spent three years with a bike as my only vehicle (MB1, all XT - that was a sweet ride) the bottom feeder LX components have served me very well. This has been my only bike since 2001 - multiple trips to Moab and Fruita, many miles pulling the Burley and lots of bike path commuting - it's never let me down.

Doesn't mean I don't read the magazines and lust after full floaters with all the toys, but I have to say I've had no complaints with this entry level ride.

Used to live in Davis, when I was going to school. Commuted on a Nishiki framed contraption that I built from the frame up.

Living in San diego, I commute 22 miles on the freeway(about 30+ on surface streets), each way, with kids to pickup once a week, also with no shower facilities...so, no-go there...

I used to think all the riding I did in college was going to effect my baby-making abilities, but since my 3rd beautiful daughter was born 2 weeks ago, It would seem I'm still "good to go" haha!!

Scott, does it have to be a bike? I'm not lucky enough to live 1 mile from my work, but at least I can have a little fun getting there ;)

Fantastic car Tony. I have fond memories of driving an S2000 around the Bondurant track.

Thank you.

That track sure looks like it would be fun. I've often wondered what it would be like to put it in a situation where the speed limit is only dictated by traction instead of laws or other cars getting in the way. :smiley_drive:

The car sticks to pavement like gorilla glue, and I really like the way it sounds north of 7000 RPMs.

When I could commute by bicycle, it looked like this:

Now that my commute is too long, it looks like this:

They are both fun, but the black one doesn't keep me in shape.

When I lived in Flagstaff I turned my first mountain bike (1999 KHS Crest) into a commuter. It still had all of the original components on it, so shifting & braking could be a bit sketchy. Not to mention the front shock was totally shot. So when Scott was getting rid of his old Gary Fisher (circa '90s), I pulled the rear rack, pedals, wheelset & tires off my old commuter & started riding this:

Invested so far: $0. In the works are a new (men's) seat. Other than that it should do just fine. I do think it would be fun to build up a super lightweight cyclocross as a commuter for around Prescott.
