Compact Printer

I have been looking for a compact printer for a while and never found anything I like. I stumbled on a Canon Selphy ES1 photo printer at Fry's and thought I'd give it a try: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0608/06082403canonselphyes1.asp.

It has a lot of nice properties for what we do.

Pros:

Ultra portable.

Very clean and tidy, small and easy to store.

It doesn't take ink or paper, it takes 50 sheet preloaded cartridges with paper and everything else it needs to print ($15 for a 50 sheet pack).

Its a dye-sub printer so the prints are completely water proof and tear proof.

No ink to spill in either the printer or the cartridges.

Cartridges are sealed keeping dust off the paper.

Seems fairly robust to being shaken around.

Its a very nice photo printer and each print is also a post card. The backs are nice to write on and have marked areas for a stamp and address. Slap a stamp on it and post it.

It can print directly from the camera (built in USB cable) or memory card.

Bluetooth support.

It has standard printer drivers so can use used as a normal printer.

Can run from a battery.

Cons:

It doesn't take normal paper. Cartridges are not hard to find in metro areas but maybe difficult in the middle of nowhere.

It has a crazy feed paper system

Can't directly print from RAW files - have to use a PC

Only prints 4x6

There is a little plastic to recycle in the used cartridges.

----

It does print beautiful photos and I was a little sceptical about printing things such as maps or directions but it does remarkably well - its really hi res.

I really like the idea of taking some stamps with me and sending people post cards while I am on the road.
