Compressor for large tires question...

I currently have almost 39" tires on my 80 series. :cow:

Would a small compressor like the ones offered at Costco just spontaenously combust at the sight of my tires?

Seriously though...would one of those work for airing up on the trail, or would they not last long with my tires?

Air

Good question. I'm looking forward to what people say. I don't want to spend 200.00 for air If I don't have to.

I have the MV-50, which is the one you show in your photo. Good little compressor for the money (I paid $25 on clearance, but even at ~$50 it's a good value). It will air up your tires, if you have the patience and time. They will do about 2.5 cfm, but I don't know how the volume at pressure changes. I find that they work pretty fast up to about 20 psi or 25 psi and the push to 30 psi and above takes the bulk of the time. They are apparently rated for 40% duty cycle and this I think is where your going to run into trouble. I have 33x9.50 tires and all four take roughly half an hour to fill with the short breaks to switch tires. The box said 40 minutes continuous at 40 psi in 75F temp. I've never had it shut down and a few times, like out in Moab, the air temp has been pretty warm. Your big mil tires are going to require being aired down a lot, I typically go to about 15 or 20 psi, depending on the trail, and come back up to 30 psi. Going down to 10 psi on your tires with that kind of volume will take forever to fill and will require at some point you shut down and let the compressor cool. The MV-50's limit is really about 35" tire. In reality you will probably require a 100% duty cycle compressor, which would not need to be shut down. Those are rarely going to cost $50, so add that to the cost of going with big tires. You could go with two of them, that would probably be the best option.

This is what I have. Air Compressor It works awsome. I have had tires up to 37s air up on it and it worked great. I have had it a couple years now and had no problems. It does get hot though. But that is to be expected.

For the money thats not a bad compressor at all. That thing is sold by a lot of different companies under a bunch of different names. the square box around the motor is all cosmetic. That is the same as a Vi Air that sells for $150 at 4wparts. I got a buddy that works for Omix Ida and they sell it under a different name. The plastic end cap is easily damage and the switch pushes through. He was selling the returns with busted tail housing for $10 a pop at a fund raiser. The version they sell has the pressure gage on the hose and had a plate it sits on like the Via Air.

They are all rated the same 33% duty cycle and 2.54 CFM

Here is a heads up run against a $200 Quick air. It won!

Here is what it is as a viair with no paint and no cosmetic box around the motor.

Here it is at Omix and the version I have

I have one that I use to air up my 285's and airbags, love it.

However, yes I think it would spontaneously combust at the site of your 39ers. Seriously.

I have one of those compressors and overall I was very impressed for the price. It all depends on how long you are willing to spend waiting to for the tires to fill. If you are impatient, go with CO2.

Put a York on it and be done with it. If you build your own bracket, get the York out of a picnpull, etc you will be under $200. Then you don't have to have it in the cabin taking up space; no load on electrical and 10cfm.

How fast do you want ?? Trail head compressor

I have one of these (3000) and a MaxAir 4cfm and a CO2 tank depending on requirements. I also have 39.5 tires. I have found that at 10,000 ft and up the little compressors don't cut the mustard.

The CO2 tanks are great if you have rapid fill plugs on your wheels, also offer the ability to reseat a tire. The down side are the refills.

The big cut is how many CFM and how many PSI.
IE 4 CFM @ 0 PSI in nothing compared to 12 CFM @ 90 PSI

So speed = money, but CO2 is not bad, on-board york style is also very good

The compressor in Willman's post looks just like the MaxAir only different colour.

The MV - 50 took about 30 minutes to air up my 4- 285 ' s but I go from 40 to 65psi with the camper on. It never shut down except to switch tires, but was too hot to take the hose off w/o a glove. I have been looking at doing this modification to the MV-50 www.4x4wire.com/tech/portable_oba/. - Brad

I was amazed that he said that the threads on the air outlet were 1/8" as I would have expected metric threads

Putting the MV-50 in a box seems bad as it does get hot. I wonder if he removes the lid when it is running?

Costco compressor

I have a similiar compressor as the one sold at Costco. Its roughly 3 years old, been airing up 35s and now 37's for all 3 years. No, they arent 39s but I have not had a single issue...they arent super fast but seem to be reliable and quick enough.
