Conflicted no more, 1990 or 1999 as a daily driver?

Seats from a minivan will cure the armrest issue. As for cup holders, I considered fabricating a replacement center console rear section with a bigger storage bin & integrated cup holders.

Yeah, I have been thinking about fabricating a center console as well. Gotta put more thought into it though.

Today I found and ordered a replacement passenger fender from Car-Part.com for just $115 shipped. I am hoping that the color matches well. We'll see.

I am also getting ready to order a Surco 5060 roof rack for it with gutter mounts. Will probably order that on Friday.

Well, I got my rack installed today. I now wish I would have gotten one a little bit longer, but the damn things are $100 for another foot. I had a Surco awhile back on my Jeep Cherokee, I know they are (relatively speaking) rather cheap, lightweight alternatives for a rack, but at this point it suits my needs. I am just beginning to get into off roading and don't plan on anything very hardcore for awhile yet, so nothing heavy is going up there. Maybe tents, sleeping bags a cooler etc.... I do plan on installing some kind of a side awning of some type. Not sure if I will go with a prefabbed one or try and make my own.

Also, I am not sure if you can notice in these pictures, but I also spray painted my driver's side window trims. I put a shot of the passenger side in to show the difference. Actually is a huge difference in person.

Looks good. I need to spray my trim as well. Right now I'm in the middle of a muffler replacement. It's too bad the tailpipe flang bolts are so rusty, as it looks like its needed to remove it to install while on the car. Keep up the good work!

Thought I would add a quick update to this thread.

It has been a little over 6 months since I bought this and have to say that I am still ecstatic about the purchase. I have not had a single serious issue so far and still feel this is as solid a truck as any other out there. I still would not hesitate to drive this anywhere.

I do have one slight problem I have yet to address. There is a small coolant leak coming from somewhere. I was originally concerned that it was coming from the water pump, but upon further inspection, everything above the crankshaft pulley is completely dry, so I think it may have a pressure leak and dripping onto the font axle shaft which is causing it to spray everywhere making it difficult to diagnose where it's coming from. I need to get a pressure test done to find the leak. Not major, I add about 1/3 gallon every 3-4 weeks. Just have to keep a careful eye on it.

Since my last post I have replaced a front brake caliper which was working, but upon inspection when changing the pads I realized, the pivot pin was frozen in place and could not be broken loose.

Also painted the window trim on the passenger side and both the bumpers. Looks quite a bit better I think.

So I have to ask a question that has already been asked once: Now that you have been driving it awhile do you still like the 1990 Gen 1?
I have both a 99 gen2.5 and a 90 gen 1.
Then 99 only has 120k on it but everytime my wife and I go some where we still reach for the keys for the 90. to us it is more comfortable and fits us better.

Your truck is real nice.
Not to point out something bad but those spots on the ground look just like when my power steering hoses used to leak. I thought it was my oil filter seal/ hoses.

I know this sounds unlikely but check the coolant hoses behind the engine. This is where my 89 leaked from and it did not seem like it was coming from that location until the hose actually burst open.

Thanks, those spots on the ground are from the cooling system, for sure. I had actually just refilled it and had a little overflow spillage!:yikes: My power steering all seems good, no issues so far.

As far as daily driving, I am very glad that I went with the Gen 1, and wouldn't hesitate to buy one again(if I found one this nice)! I still think it's very comfortable, I have received a lot of compliments on it, and I seem to catch myself smiling all the time when I'm driving it. It's funny, most of the compliments seem to come from my 13 year old daughter's friends, they all think it is really neat and looks like an African Safari truck.

People ask me all the time why the sunroof is over the back seat, and I just tell them that in 3rd world countries, where these are used the most, that they need someplace for the machine gunner to shoot from! In actuality that may not be far from the truth!

Thanks fangars, I THINK that the leak is coming from one of the 2 small lines coming out of the bottom of the radiator(I think to the heater core), they are attached to 2 short 6" rubber lines which I think are the culprits, but I will check where you are suggesting.

Yugo:

Was that public land in Zanesville? I would like to paddle the Licking and going wheeling too would make for a fun weekend. I see you're north of Columbus. Any intel on places to wheel near Hocking Hills? Have a trip under planning way for there as well. Feel free to email me via the addy in my profile.

Thanks,
Bill

I gotta say it, I don't like this picture :/ haha

It was just a joke! LOL... I did have to get a couple lite "tugs", as I got High Centered in some very deep ruts. Hard to move when your wheels aren't even touching the ground! Once I learned that little fact, I went the rest of the day with no issues. That is my brother's Hummer, so I'm just glad it wasn't HIM that pulled me out! That's why he "posed" that picture.
