Considering a used 2005 LR3

This vehicle would be my DD. It has roughly 36,000 miles on it priced at $23,000. Not a great deal but seems fair. I like the 3rd row seats and the 4.0L V6 instead of the 4.4L V8.

Thoughts?

I am looking at LR3s, as well. Depending on what you're willing to spend, I would look at a 06, possible 07. The 05s had a lot of issues, but if it came from an owner who maintained it well, a lot of the issues (usually software) could have been taken care of.

I could buy a warranty for a couple grand and be covered for another 60,000 miles. I wanted to stay as close to $20K as possible. This popped up when I was looking at Commanders and Suburbans, quite a different vehicle.

Buy the warranty.
I had 2 05 LR3's, one for me and the other for my wife. Hers never had any problems and we still drive it without a glitch. Mine had multiple problems, but I wheeled it a fair bit with little knowledge about what not to do while off-roading. Heck I'm still learning what not to do!

Mine is long gone but I drive the other one as my DD and its been perfect imo.

BTW I have a friend who sells at Patrick LR in Naperville if you want to see what they have in stock. He has made me some great deals in the past! PM me if you want his contact info.

My sister-in-law has an 05 LR3. They had a ton of problems the first year, mostly with the air compressor, all fixed under warranty. They finally got the design of the compressor right and they have had no problems since.

Why do you prefer the V6?

Post this up on CLRC... I was told to avoid 05, and the V6. Apparently the V8 is more reliable.

Not actually true. The V6 is quite solid, and puts out more power than the previous generation 4.0L Rover V8's. I have the V6 LR3, and have thousands of miles in a V8 also. There isn't much difference in gas mileage. The V6 dos not lack for power or torque, but the V8 feels more nimble, and has better 60-80 passing speed for sure. On the trail, there is no appreciable difference, though I feel that the transmission gearing is better suited, or more seamless, in the V6. However, the 4.4L V8 in the LR3 is also a great motor and is what I'd recommend if you have the choice.

Bit of a buyers guide here: http://blog.nextstepdesigns.com/?p=78

I also explained a bit about the LR3's capabilities and features in this thread here: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23932

Cheers!

I believe the engine is a ford v6.

The Land Rover Dealer said it is a Volvo.

I bought one today, not from the dealer. Green on Tan SE with a V6, seven passenger, excellent warranty. I'm happy and plan to put a lot of miles on it.
