Sorry, I was talking about the original subject of this post, the '83 pickup with the built-in camper. You guys must have been talking about the Chinook slide-in.

'76 Toyota Chinook Camper - runs well but needs some work. 98K miles, good gas mileage for a camper - about 17/20 mpg. We'll take $1500 or the best offer.

Sleeps two comfortably, and has a pop-up top. It's great for road trips, camping, hunting, or whatever you think of. We've had fun with it, took it to Mexico, but can't use it anymore because we have two small children now, and the rear seats are side facing - you can't use child seats with it.

We had a mechanic check out the camper for us; here's what he found that needs to be fixed:

* Needs new front brakes
* Muffler and exhaust pipes are very rusted
* Radiator should be flushed and new hoses
* Needs new heater hoses
* Needs new battery cables
* Needs a tune-up
* Needs a new air filter and wiper blades
* Needs a new fuel filter
* Needs new gaskets for the window (driver's side) track

Not counting fixing the driver's side window, our mechanic estimated those repairs at $473.

In addition to this, the tires need to be balanced (it's been sitting, mostly undriven, for a few years) and the speaker for the radio does not work. Also, the propane system needs to be repaired (the outside hose needs to be replaced, I don't know if the rest of the line is okay).

That would have the 20R engine, right? Predecessor to the 22R? 1800cc IIRC.

Around here that thing would be in 2nd gear going up I-70, probably doing about 10mph!

Although...that probably wouldn't be any worse than a VW Bus camper!

I liked this part:

They are not making them like this anymore. A dependable, reliable,
camper that gets 22 mpg and can go 70 mph all day long

I think maybe what he meant to say is "will take all day to get to 70mph."

Actually, if he is on the piedmont or tidal flats of Eastern NC, he'd be fine but I sure wouldn't want to take that rig up into the Smokey Mountains. I'd guess you'd be doing about 15mph in 2nd gear and getting passed by VW busses and guys on bicycles! :D
