My wife surprised me for my birthday with a trip to the Outer Banks! We both had to work on Saturday, so I loaded the truck on Friday with our travelling/offroad gear.
Saturday after work, about 12:30 we left the house for our short beach run. The drive got a little exciting as we went through Norfolk; in the lane to the right and ahead of us a cement truck dropped a steel rod about 18" long. Of course the rod bounced right up into my line of sight, dropped down and hit the truck!:yikes: I couldn't see where it hit, right through the grill by the look from my view. I couldn't stop to check, traffic was bad, so I watched guages until we got to a stop. Where'd it hit? Best place it could...license plate cover! :jump: Whew! Visions of buying a new grill or radiator disappeared!
We reached the hotel just before dark, then it was off to dinner :eatchickeat the Sunset Grill in Duck.
Sunday morning we got a beautiful sunrise then we packed up, checked out and headed to where the road ends. Air down, push the magic button and we're the second truck to make tracks on a pristine beach! I noticed the stumps were a bit taller and a lot more numerous this time, apparently a storm washed a bit of sand away since we'd been here last spring. And a large buoy was washed ashore.
12 miles later we're at the VA/NC stateline for a 4 mile shell hunt in False Cape State Park. The fence separating the states was about 2 feet off the sand! Last year it was touching the sand! The dunes were cut sharp, instead of gently sloped, glad I missed that excitement!
We hiked and shelled, found dead jellyfish, and a pelican; saw lots of dolphins fishing in close to shore. After we made it back to the truck we took to the backroads to look for the horses. The water pools were everywhere and required a bit of careful driving, and we only found two horses! Fun drive anyway.
The day was over way too soon and we had to head home, school tomorrow for the kids. Oh well; after all; I had my birthday on the beach!
