Crazy insurance issue

I am looking at buying a former Millitary vehicle as a base for a camper build. I called my insurance company and they said they could not cover the truck as a truck because it was too big. I asked if it could be listed as an RV. They said no.

They said the weight was not the issue. Since it was Millitary, the state has to issue a VIN, not the manufacturer. They do not accept state issued vins.

Also, they do not accept home built campers. This I can solve since I am looking at builders anyway, but not sure on the VIN.

This is in Texas if that helps.

Any thoughts? Who are you using and any luck in Texas?

Thanks!

Progressive says they do not insure home built campers.

I found a builder that can build my RV, and he vin is federally issued, so that should be ok.

Who is everyone else using for insurance?

My buddy built an camper out of a budget van. It is insured it for $40k though Allstate. He had $19k and his labor into it. He just sold it for $38900.

I used Progressive in MI for a1973 M35A1. It was registered as a "Pickup truck" since the bed had sides on it, like a pickup.
I carried liability only, figuring not much was likely to damage it beyond fairly easy repair.
I used the registration (serial?) number as the VIN. I'm guessing that because it was a pre-1980 truck, this didn't trigger any alarms about a non-17 digit vin. (17 digit vins started in 1980...)

Good luck!!

I am looking at a ‘97 m1083....... progressive said it was too big. Maybe I could do a commercial vehicle for non-commercial use.
