would love to see a diesel in the taco like chryslers 3.0 diesel, they are even putting it in the 1500, Toyota sometimes you really suck

I'd be shocked if Toyota went with a Cummins Diesel instead of one of their own.

You've got to think with the new Euro emissions coming in they've got engines that meet the US standards.

Then why did Nissan choose Cummins? Surely Nissan/Renault has diesels around the world that would be suitable here, right?

The fact is that Toyota and Nissan don't sell enough half ton trucks to justify the expense of bringing their own diesel to market. If the "take rate" of diesel is 10% and you only sell 70,000 trucks per year, that means they'll sell only 7,000 as diesels. Divide the multi-million dollar expense by only 7,000 units and it simply doesn't make financial sense.

If more people were willing to buy diesels then the business case gets stronger. Right now the demand isn't there.

The Tundra is a full size truck; does the D4D put out enough oomph to be competitive with a V8 gasser or the Cummins diesel V8 in the Nissan?? The Hino diesels are medium duty and seem too robust for a 1/2 ton pickup, so I don't see Toyota moving those in to the truck market. Not to mention the engineering costs to make something like that suitable for the Tundra. Cummins has spent that development money, as it would seem, and has a viable engine. It would seem that there is a gap in the Toyota diesel engine lineup where they apparently think they need to be; a 500+ ft-lb light duty engine.

You nailed it. Cummins seems to be the only company who is willing/able to develop a diesel for this niche, because they may be able to sell to multiple OEMs and have it all make financial sense.

Full disclosure; I work at Cummins, but am a Toyota fanboy. Just calling it like I see it.

I predict that we will never get a diesel Tacoma in the US, but I hope that I'm wrong. At this point it is the only thing I can see that would make me consider a new truck. Especially considering the cost of trucks these day and my '05 being paid off. A diesel Tacoma is the only thing that could come to market that would make me say "Yeah, that's worth $500 a month".

What about the 32V diesel V8 that Toyota uses in Australia? This should fit the Tacoma / Tundra, right? Or the 3L diesel sold in the HiLux?

Aha! The 1VD-FTV... I stand corrected, as I was completely unaware that this existed.

cummins didnt build this engine just for nissan and nissan would only put the engine in their trucks if they were promised more power than the other markets. cummins already makes a 4cyl and a 3cyl diesel that are already swapped into almost every type of vehicle, it wont be long and we will see the V8 swaps.

i also work for cummins but drive a yota lol

As you surely know, the engine was designed exclusively for Chrysler for the Ram 1500. Was supposed to launch in 2013, but when Chrysler went bankrupt, the contract with Cummins was ripped up. Cummins has been looking for buyers ever since.

And I would assume that any OEM that comes to sign a contract on the engine can have whatever rating (i.e. hp/torque) they want...

Yeah, not so much. The gasser in the Tundra works just fine. Toyota has no reason to put a diesel in the tundra
