Custom Roof Rack - Need Gutter Mount Options

I'm making my own rack similar to this one: DIY Roof Rack: The H-Moose! The dimesions of mine will be 46x65. It is a flat, generic style rack. I just need to figure out what height gutter mounts I need to buy due to the raised rear of the D2 roof. Also how many would I need for this length? I don't plan on putting much up there (shovel, jerry cans when wheeling). The rack is also really light weight so I believe I would be fine with 2 mounts per side.

It's going to depend on whether you have sun roofs and want them to remain functional. You could have someone measure the towers on their roof rack and give you the specs. If you don't have sunroofs, then the towers can be lower.

You could also get some of the tall Thule or Yakima towers with bars and build off of those for a rack like you're describing.

If you do that, get the Yakima ones. The metal piece on them can be trimmed down to the exact height you want the rack to ride at. The Thule feet are fixed and don't offer an easy way to modify them.

Maybe its different on a DII than a DI. I tried the Yakima on my DI and the vertical "legs" touched the alpine windows in back. The Yakima feet actually come in towards the cab while the Thule box out a little. Something to look into.

I know you are a poor college student but be patient and get an SD rack if you want one pretty badly. You really don't need on at all though for the kind of wheeling you will encounter.

Quick-N-Easy is another brand of rain-gutter rack mounts, used by boaters

These are some I've been looking at. Just don't know if they're tall enough.

Timmy - No way I'd spend that much money on a rack. Many other things I'd like to get before spending $900 on a rack. Just need something up there to carry a little extra load on trips (plus, it looks cool:sombrero:)

You can get d1 SD racks for $500 all day long. A little more for the D2. Also factor in the lost mpg.

I thought my mpg was better. Stupid scangauge says i average 9mpg. Figure you will lose 1.5mpg with a rack.

I just picked up a ramp on CL yesterday for $100 that has bars going width wise and length wise so that will cut a step out for me. My only other major cost should be the mounting brackets. Should be able to get it done and painted up for a little over $200

Has anybody used the quick-n-easy mounts on a discovery? It says they're 7 3/8", just want to make sure that will be long enough to clear the roof before I pull the trigger on them.
