Well if you are on this page then chances are you like getting off the beaten path and I don't blame you. That said I'm sure you are like me and would like the freedom to go for a long distance without having to stop for fuel(including using Jerry cans). Well thankfully there is an option available, it it will cost you a bit.
The Factory Tank in the D40 with the VQ40DE is 80 Liters/21.125 Gallons. The Tank I'm mentioning is 155 Liters/40.95 Gallons. It is made by Outback Accessories Australia and the part number is FTN52. It requires a different Fuel Pump assembly with gasket and a Fuel Filler Neck due to differences of the US Built and Spanish Built D40(don't ask me why when they both have the VQ40DE available).
The installation isn't too bad, it I highly recommend having an extra set of hand if you can. If you have a two post lift with transmission jack, that's even better. Just know that it is a tight fit.
Clearance underneath is about the same as Factory. Unless you are on the wrong trail or not paying attention, you won't have to worry about hitting the tank on the trail.
How much does it cost with everything? If installing it yourself it will run you close to $4,000. If having a shop do the work for you, good luck.
Is it worth it for you? Well if you like getting off of the beaten path for as long as possible and/or tow often, then yes it is an excellent option that is worth it. If you stay on the street and in town, then it is hard to justify. Just know that every modification has its place.
