Damn You NAPA

Having fuel consumption issues with my pig of a 4runner and trying to sort out the "whys" of it, I started with the fuel filter. I buy a Napa gold one yesterday, attempt to put it on today and the stupid thing leaks like crazy!
I read about 10000000000 threads on this happening to others and they all seem to say that it's because the threads aren't lined up properly.
I have to contest that because I fiddled around with it for 3 hours, taking the lines on and off and never got it to stop leaking. Put the old one back on and on the 1st try, it doesn't leak. I guess I'll be buying another brand tomorrow.
I wonder how much Toyota will gouge me for one.
Rant off!!

I've tried to like NAPA. Seems every time I go there, they don't have what I need. Or I deal with a moron who acts as if I don't know what I'm talking about and just tries to sell me SOMETHING, ANYTHING even if it's not what I'm asking for. (Here, this is practically the same thing har har har try this...). Not all NAPA's are the same but the one here sux.

For filters, plugs, hoses, belts and wear parts I stick with OEM even if it costs a few bucks more... peace of mind is worth it.

Uh oh. I have a Napa gold fuel filter sitting here on the counter waiting for me to put it in this weekend. Kinda makes me think twice about it.... I've never had any issues from Napa stuff though. I'd rather buy their parts than stuff from O'Reilly's (my only other option here in town), and the dealer is just way expensive here. Fuel filter was twice as much at the stealership. We'll see. I might try it anyways. Plugs I did get from the dealer though....

Try asking for 5 spark plugs for an Audi S4... They look at you like you have a hole in your head.

Come to think of it, try asking for 8 spark plugs for a NAPS-Z engine in a Datsun 720..... My cars are fun.

hmm.... I found my Napa to be pretty good, then again it's the eastern Canadian main office / warehouse.
I hit them with a Dana 44 parts list... bearings and seals, calipers, pads, rotors, u-joints.. they had them all.
I usually research part numbers and ask them to dig them up.
There was one instant where Bucky (my name for the pimply kids behind sales counters) looked at me, like a deer in headlights, when I said Jeep Wagoneer, no reaction, then blinked when I said K-10 truck... LOL. I asked for the manager.
I got to know the parts manager, so I don't screw around, I'll walk right up to him, or demand to deal with him directly.

As for replacing Toyota parts, I go OEM all the way.

napa seems to be slowly deteriorating before my eyes. had 1 in western wa my dad and i went to since i was little, then they changed ownership (napa stores are all privately owned, that's why some are good, some not) and were complete *******s. eventually i found another good store, but now with what i have been reading and experiencing lately, they seem to have some serious quality issues as they find cheaper parts manufacturers. i have also heard they don't honor their warranty policy as well, again having a lot to do with each sore being a private entity. that leads me to where i am now. i now have a torn cv boot, and can't can't find the receipt for the napa brand one i currently have on the truck, so it's keeping me from getting a replacement under warranty. i instead decide to buy a remanufactured cv joint which are significantly cheaper and from what i understand are typically refurbished oem, and will turn in the other as a core. the first one i look at doesn't come with a dust seal at either end, so i refuse it. i then research and find that is how they often come, and as janky as it sounds to me, you reuse the seals off your old one. so i go back to purchase one, but this time it was a remanufactured napa brand like the one i have on the truck, obvious because of the different tulip on it, which is smooth all the way around, not more triangular like oem. the plus side, it has dust seals on both ends! now after what i've been reading, i don't want another napa original to replace it. along with that, it just seems like the stores i have gone to around here have no idea what is going on, and could really care less

Surprisingly enough, I have been having good luck with O'Reilly (formerly Kragen). They were the ONLY people who could get me a brake caliper for the Audi, and it was a reman Audi original that looked brand new. I have also never had a problem with the lifetime warranties from them. They go by phone number rather than receipt, though I guess I'm screwed if their computers ever die and they lose my history.

Where I live, NAPA is an order of magnitude better than VatoZone or Orally Men, but for most all specific-to-the-model Toyota parts I much prefer to get OEM Aisin, Denso, Toyota, etc. at the dealer. I own/have owned so many Toyotas that I'm on a first-name basis with all of the parts people at the dealership closest to me, and they give me the wholesale price. :sombrero: Most of them look at it as a break in a boring day to try and find stuff for my older trucks. I'm continually amazed at what Toyota still makes for old Land Cruisers and mini-trucks.

The Napa near my house has friendly employees. I bought a power steering just to give it a try since. Man is it loud. I don't mind if it stays together.
