Deutsche-optic 5 Gallon fuel cans

they certainly look very cool. and apparently have some historic presidence.

this leads into a thread i should start: should accessories be "period matched" to your vehicle?

for example: if these tanks we visibly displayed on a Willys, they'd look boss. but on an FJ, i think they would look out of place. my thought being the FJ is a much more contemporary lined vehicle and the tanks are more utilitarian.

if they're going to be carried out of site, i guess it wouldn't matter what they looked like. but then i think there are more moderately priced cans available

I'd buy them before their gone. I have 5 cans myself. 3 from D.O. and 2 I purchased locally. Far superior to any can I've seen used. Don't leak (fluids or fumes) unlike most cans. I've even run with them inside the rig, they're that air tight.

Unlike many others, I've given up on trying to use the spout made for them (wedco and other brands). Seems they leak more than anything. Now I just use a supersiphon and relax while it pours into my tank instead of holding one next to the gas fill hole while tilting it so that the gas pours in all the while making sure it doesn't hit my rig and scratch any more paint off.:ylsmoke:

I've got 16 of them and they are great. When I ordered mine they had the spouts painted yellow for diesel and had pink gaskets which did not hold up to gasoline. I ordered the black replacement gaskets from them and they've been fine. I carry eight of them on my flatbed (six diesel and two gas) and they've been there for thousands of miles on and off road without a leak.

I've got 4 of them that I've been using for 6 months. Not one problem, they don't leak fuel or fumes. Best can I have ever had.

They look like run of the mill NATO cans to me.
I have about 20 NATO cans of various mfg., some bought new and some bought used, and none leak.
$50 is pretty expensive, even for new, but I guess these days it's a sellers' market.

I have three NATO cans and really like them. I wish I had a couple more but it seems the days of picking them up for $15 per are well passed. I guess it isn't too bad I really only use two as it is.

cans

I purchased 4 of them just after they got them in and offered the free shipping special. They are identical to some red Wedco cans that I got new a few months before and some older used NATO cans I've had for a few years.

I also ordered some spare black gaskets from them and wanted a spout or two but the one that they had didn't seem to be rated very good. I got some red and blue spouts with the Wedco cans when I bought them and they work great. No leaks.

I just got a new catalog from them and they are now marking the cans, stamped into the metal, with for water only or something so that they are legal to sell in CA.

They also carry the 5 and 10 liter cans.

Yes, since they are not strictly CARB-legal, they are being stamped "Not for Fuel Use" or somesuch.

Not sure if there would ever be a problem with that if you DID use them for fuel. Maybe an uptight LEO trying to find as many ways to ding you, or if you lived in Oregon where you don't fill your own tanks...

These guys are local for me and have provided great customer service. I have some of their older cans that were made for diesel and with a gasket swap they were excellent. The newly manufactured cans they offer now come with gas-compatible gaskets. I plan to get another 4 and a couple of the spouts that attach to the top. The olive drap color is cool, I'm not a fan of the bright red and yellow cans!

I snagged a "pac-o'-four" a couple of weeks ago. Haven't filled 'em up yet but they look spec-freakin'-tacular. :wings:

I bought 8 of these two years back. They were brand new and hold up well, no fumes and very good locking mech. They don't visibly expand or contract due to temperature change either.

I second the siphon comment, I've looked around for a well designed funnel and came up with nothing.
