Did Nissan Kill the SFA for Toyota???

As much as it pains me to say, shotts is mostly correct. However, In 04 sometime, I was driving my 93 on hwy 20 in NORCAL from willits to fort bragg, and a guy in a Volkswagen Passat station wagon tried to leave me in the dust. Now, I gre up driving that road and had the benefit of being in the rear, but he could not shake me. He didn't know the road well, but he was flogging that passat pretty hard. Point being, don't discount the handling of a solid axle rig too much. They can still hang.

If I had been in the passat, the guy in the LC would never have seen me.....

you just admitted, then, that it was the driver not the vehicle, that gave your LC the advantage. so much for defending the solid axle...

in the 60s, toyota and nissan reached an agreement. nissan would discontinue Patrol sales in the USA, so that toyota could have that entire market with the FJ. in turn, toyota axed their US-bound little sports car, so that nissan could keep their Z car.

so, we ended up with the Z (and what a great market it has been for nissan), but we've been shortchanged on the Patrol ever since.
Have you a source for this?
It sounds plausible, but it also could easily be conjecture or net legend.

Not trying to defend it, the IFS is clearly a superior on road design. Just saying that toyota put a lot of R&D into the 80 series and the handling reflects that time and money--it handles as well or better than my IFS T100.

Oh sure...they can hang. But it's "how they hang" that makes the difference. Newer technology makes a difference and the auto makers use it to sell vehicles.

True.

Incidentally, I read a comparison of the Challenger, mustang and camaro in C&D a few months ago.

The Mustang won.......with a solid rear axle....

SFA is durable, strong and simple.
The same things also make it less effective on-road.

For car-like handling, you need less unsprung weight and independent suspension. This adds fragility and complexity by design.

thank god they are finally killing that POS RX8 and coming out with a true RX7 sportscar again.

The reason the Mustang handles better than the Camaro or Challenger is that it is much lighter and has a better power to weight ratio. Just the fact it's a lot lighter makes it a better handling machine.

When the 5.0 comes out soon, it will be even better.

I luv my POS. I wouldn't want a TT Rx7 over mine for anything. There's nothing like normal asperation. I also wouldn't give up the amazing ride quality and extreme handling combo of my POS. My son's Honda S2000 rocks but I'd never trade my POS 8 for it.

And blowing away a new Camaro yesterday who was first trying to pass me before a left turn at a light...then was on my tail up to it and then who dropped WAY BACK in and after the turn....luv my POS 8. It went over 50MPH around that left turn solid as a rock at 5000RPM. Shifted into 3rd when the buzzer went off at just over 9000RPM. Ahhhhhhhhhhh.....luv that POS.

As I don't thrash my LLC or do rock crawling, I'm quite satisfied with IFS and how it handles for the off-road driving *I* do. A solid front axle would wasted on me except on my HD truck.

You know...I don't think the SFA wheeling die hards would demand the SFA IF...IF slapping on a tall lift to an IFS rig wasn't such a pain (or impossible if such a kit isn't made).

My 80's suck in comparison to my 100, however I sure wish I could get a 5-6" lift on the 100. Not happening.

THere is a discussion on the 100 tech forum on iH8mud, in-depth on long travel and different suspension setups for the 100.

they discussed the tundra lt kit
