Why illegal? I've owned an 1985 MB diesel van that was a legal grey market van. In fact it was imported by Europa that was the official US importer of G-Wagons.
The photos show a license plate on the rear of the vehicle, so some state must think it's legal for the street. I'd ask if there is a plate in the engine compartment indicating which company imported the vehicle and brought it into compliance with safety and emissions controls.
If all the DOT/EPA paper work is in order then there is no problem. If its not...
Most of the G-wagens that are here gas and diesel are legal and were brought in by a registered importer and federalized. But some weren't so when looking at any gray market vehicle its always good to see the paper work.
